And while initially their possible relationship seemed more like comedy fodder than anything resembling a serious possibility, the anime managed to alienate plenty of its fans when it decided to rip the Band-Aid off and commit to its...well lead couple. Kuroneko was RIGHT there, guys.

And then alienated the rest by trying to put the bandaid back on. Kirino wasn’t my preferred ship (I would have preferred Kuroneko as well), but if they had stuck with it, they could have been commended for boldness, even if it was unwise. But after having the MC burn all his romantic bridges by coming out as having incestous feeling for his actual sister, turning back at the very end makes the whole thing half-assed, while winning back none of those they lost by lunging that way without plausible deniability. There isn’t much of a point in turning around after you have already driven off the cliff. It would have been better not to have gone that way at all, than to commit to actual incest and then turn back, which is probably why shows in Oreimo’s vein after it stuck with plausible deniability.

It's a shame, yet not surprising in the slightest, that Kyousuke and Kirino are on this list. I actually like them as a pair, only y'know, in the sense of them being two siblings who grew apart to the point of hostility gradually rekindling their familial bond through a strange choice of hobby, as opposed to the incestually-minded pretext that was clearly included to pander to the crowd Oreimo was drawing in first and foremost. Besides, Kyousuke was throwing away his dignity as far back as episode 3 when he claimed one of Kirino's eroge was actually his in front of their father, so him doing more of the same by the series' end didn't nearly bother me as much as it did the rest of you.

Personally, my worst couple is Ichika Orimura and any one of his harem members by the end of season 2 that isn't Kanzashi Sarashiki. They're all too irrationally violent for my taste, so much so that Love Hina's selections might actually be preferable.

While your latter statement is mostly true, it's not that odd; both one of my sisters and the cousin I am closest with ended up reuniting with and marrying their high school sweethearts after separating for several years during their college and early career days. (Though apparently in the cousin's case, there was a tacit understanding when they broke up that they'd marry each other if neither had found someone better by their late 20s. They've been married for around 20 years now.)

Weren't Naruto and co 10-ish, more like grade school?

Probably the worst relationship in anime I've ever seen is Vegeta and Bulma. I mean, even the actors hated it due to how forced it was and how it made Yamcha looked horrible for turning him into a cheater.

Yeah Vegeta and Bulma were a marriage of convenience nothing more.

Goku and Chichi were only better due the none cheating angle but that doesn't shake the fact Goku is a horrible dad and Chichi is a housewife in denial. Her husband goes off and has fights that he has a high chance of not coming back from and Chichi doesn't even take the chance to think of her own happiness and divorce Goku.

Tenga getting paired with Chidori in Kiznaiver was a chemistry-less forced crossing off of boxes.

Saito cheated on Louise and was horrible to her; he really should've just gone with Henrietta instead.

I think there is a difference between “Oops, Dad found my porn” and “Oops, I told everyone I know that I have romantic feelings for my actual sister, so emphatically that I got into a physical fight with one of them”. The former is certainly embarrassing but unsurprising for a teenage boy; the latter would probably require changing your name and moving somewhere where no one knows you, and possibly being disowned by your family.

Insulting Charl in this fashion, prepare for death.

I think I have to give the top worst spot to Koshiro and Nanoka from Koi Kaze.

Twelve year age gap? Check.
Blood-related siblings? Check.
Nanoka is a minor? Check!

There's also Koshiro having his mid-life crisis and working his way up to a nervous breakdown, but that's a trivial issue here. The series is extraordinary and I highly recommend it, but, excluding the parade of toxic relationships in stuff like Amnesia, Diabolik Lovers, or DRAMAtical Murder, Koshiro and Nanoka's relationship is just the worst idea from every angle.

At this point, the NPC hate for Shield Hero is just funny.
I mean the romance is just all sorts of messy. She is a slave to him but instead of wanting to stand on equal footing with him she instead wants to remain his slave because she views that as love. I get it she really loves him and all but she doesn't have to keep the spell on her. It feels less like love and more like a dependency. And I'm willingly to overlook the father daughter type of relationship they had in the beginning.

Yeah, if this were real life. But it's just an anime/light novel, so I think the end effects won't be as far-reaching and detrimental to Kyousuke, the protagonist with no dignity, as they would be in a more accurate universe.

(To be fair, I had something like this coming, for daring to have a positive opinion of Oreimo/replying to this thread at all. Razz)

For what it's worth, Charl is one of the better ones in Ichika's main harem. If there's one thing I have to commend the worst scene in Infinite Stratos 2 and anime for the decade (that being Ichika trying to take his classmates' measurements with his eyes closed and the harem beating him up for it) for, it's the surprisingly smart decision to leave Charl out of it entirely.

i feel like yuno and yuki should've been number 1 on the list. remember the time yuno drugged and kidnapped yuki, kept him shackled to a chair for a week with the intention of holding him captive for a month, collected his pee in a jug, and force-fed him while he was in a catatonic state, all the while wearing nothing but her underwear for some reason? a master-slave relationship is pretty messed up, but she also took away his autonomy.

I'm happy this sort of thing went out of style because how can you root for a couple where one is constantly wailing on the other over every little thing?

Mean-spirited or not, I was glad to see Naru getting the short end of the slap stick in Love Hina Again. It felt as if they ended more on the same level than they might have otherwise.

I'd say that Haruka and Sora from Yosuga no Sora were a more squick-tastic incestuous (twincest!) relationship than Oreimo. (Aki Sora is straight-up hentai, and doesn't even pretend otherwise.) And, yes, Kuroneko deserved so much better.

Was Evangelion too much of a train-wreck, relationship-wise, to even consider? Or was this list only for amateurs?

I am not a fan of Araragi and Sengjougahara in the [x]monogatari series. Their chemistry always seems forced, like they stay together for the manzai rather than out of real feeling.

Gamers! is such a comedy of errors, but Amano Keita and Hoshinomori Chiaki get the prize for stubbornly star-crossed couple. They even have one of the other characters hang a lampshade on how bad it is.

Future topics for The List: I nominate "Five harem endings that work as more than just fan-service."

I would put Shield Hero lower on the list, Future Diary, and Death Note relationships are way more worst than Shield Hero. I might even take it off the list, since School Days, Naruto, and Code Geass have more awful relationships then Shield Hero.
Saying that I still believe Shield Hero relationships is still awful and wish the plot didn't make all the people who against them into awful people (oh well).

I felt that Shield Hero would be here and that there would be some defense of it. People really seem to love that show and Goblin Slayer, it seems. Figures.

Of the couples listed, Light and Misa are the worst for just how influential they are. They're anime Joker and HQ and the fact that Misa is a girl in an Ohba manga doesn't help either.
