I appreciate the design choice. There seems to be a spectrum of the "full dive" aesthetic from the Matrix/Tron/SAO where everyone looks like themselves in fancier clothes to Ghost in the Shell where it was mostly the idea of falling through lines of code. Since this is a more cartoony material than Ghost in the Shell, I think the more cartoony "other world" makes sense. It also helps sell the whole reverse of the humans are the NPCs and the AI are playing the game.

This is what I figured out was the case, they're using the terms "cyborgs" and "robots" interchangeably like they have the same origins. And the fact they're really making it up as they go along.

That is the exact quote of the show. At some point, I reached the question "If the show's gamer based then why have huge boss monsters that can only be taken out by the city and not the players?" and the answer I got was "Because".

It's cool, it's so part of the show that I think it's why the show is named after it but it makes no sense once we learn they built the giant kiaju as well.
