Wow, the principal and vice principal are almost as bad. They're the heads of school, they should be protecting their students, not their own image...

Hope this puts paid to any questions of "were the images just drawings?" Whilst it's not conclusive anything we've seen ( I know that sounds weird but it's only from a legal standpoint I mean, no guilty verdict has been handed down), I think you've got go through some pretty radical mental gymnastics to think this guy hasn't done anything wrong.

"Viz Media responded to ANN's request for comment on Sunday and confirmed that he has been working as an independent contractor for the publisher. The company noted that they have several translators who are independent contractors and provide services for a variety of titles."

Thats all viz had to say?

usually a company would say they have severed ties

never forget, some kept working in the industry https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/03/12/credits-show-funimation-allegedly-continued-working-with-former-one-piece-voice-actor-scott-freeman-despite-2014-child-pornography-arrest/

But Viz already has moved on from him. If you look on the WSJ app at all the series he was previously working on, all of them have replaced him with other translators as of a month ago, around the time he was arrested. Viz may see that as enough, especially since he was a freelancer instead of a full-fledged employee.

After all, manga translators, editors, etc. are not a huge community and they likely were spreading the word about this internally before this went public. Even in the (highly unlikely) possibility that he is not convicted, he's not going to be working as a manga translator ever again. Just look at Gerard Jones (another manga translator turned convicted pedophile) as an example.

Don't under estimate the ability of certain segments of the anime community to rationalize away the possession of child pornography and/or sexual harassment. The community as a whole (both on the fan side and on the professional side) has been far too accepting for far too long of "borderline" content and behavior, which just makes the actual scumbags feel at home.

If they were drawings, the charges wouldn't be CP, though he might have been charged with obscenity. So he had the real thing for what he got busted for recently.

This case has nothing to do with drawings(at least no speck of evidence to say otherwise). And don't conflate fans of drawn works to those engaging in heinous criminal acts. I certainly don't condone what he did, nor do I know anyone else who does who shares the same hobbies...

Viz may not have known why he was arrested until the news broke this weekend. Yesterday or today would have been their first day back in the office. They can't say anything until it's vetted by a lawyer. They may also want to run any statements though a specialist PR consultant.

The most honest, well intentioned statement can get you into a lot of legal and PR trouble in situations like this.

If they knew the details back in early December, when he was arrested, they had plenty of time to prepare a proper statement and should have done so by now. But if they only learned over the holiday, or this past weekend, it's normal that they don't have much of a statement yet.
