Okay I'm seeing some stuff about the mom not knowing about the badge tests and that got answered already that it was in the manga, but got cut and about why Inori didn't ask her sister and a few other stuff that comes up in the following episodes. Had a whole write-up, but decided not to post it. It'll come up in the following episodes and I'll talk about it then.

Really love how no one mentioned that this show has horseshit subtitle timing in Episode 1. Also, aren't Disney+ using dubtitles for this one and is incapable of serving subtitles and dubtitles separately?

The only anime on Disney+ with regular subtitles that I know of is The Tatami Time Machine Blues.

I found that, at least on desktop, Hulu's subtitle timing can sometimes get thrown off by the 3 second Hulu logo that they append to the beginning, even though it's a separate video from the main feature. To solve it, you have to let the episode play out a bit and refresh, such that it resumes where you left off instead of starting over. Then you can rewind.
How they haven't fixed this in over a year, I have no idea.

If you're outside of North America, you have to watch on Disney+, which uses dubtitles. So if you're outside US, you have no choice but to watch this using that instead of proper subs.

In my experience Hulus subs aren’t that good either, with both Medalist and Ishura the subtitles seem to always go out of sync.

No, I don't 'have' to watch it with dubtitles. Actually, I am watching it with proper subs.

Comment I stole from Reddit that absolutely NAILS why this series is AOTS.
Quote: | It doesn't seem like it, but this strategy meeting between Inori and Tsukasa on their strategy is such a major moment of personal growth for Inori. She's made some massive strides forward, but her self-worth and esteem are still nearly non-existent. Meeting Hikaru was good in one way, but the distance in their ability is daunting and disheartening.
Miketaro makes for a good friend for Inori since Mike is closer to her in ability, but then Inori's new friend basically throws all of Inori's shortcomings at her because Inori disappointed her.
Whether it's on purpose or not, Tsukasa's strategy meeting is timely and hits at all the right buttons for Inori. He's gentle, but firm. Even though Inori has no confidence in herself or her decisions, Tsukasa gives her complete agency over her actions. He refuses to offer an opinion because he doesn't want to sway her decision. She has to be able to choose her own actions going forward. Inori rationalizes this all as Tsukasa being kind enough not to rebuke her for making the wrong choice, but Tsukasa proves her wrong. He assures her that no matter what choice Inori makes, he will back her 100% and deliver victory for her.
It's all baby steps right now, but Inori being in an environment where she can even make choices with confidence is such a big deal for someone like her when she has immense personal demons to battle with right now. |

That scene really hit for me too. A lot of the time I wish Tsukasa would be... less - he's just too over the top - but when he's in serious coaching mode, he's a really great character. He's not just teaching her skating, he's teaching her life, and doing a really good job of it.
This is not a show I was originally intending to watch, but it's quickly become the one I'm most looking forward to this season.

This very briefly got touched on in the first episode and the manga is more upfront about.
But Tsukasa has very similar issues with a low sense of self-worth amongst other issues that he masks(he really IS a human golden retriever though, just one with some unworked issues).

Unsure what the situation is outside the US, but I checked to compared the subtitle translation to the closed captions for the dubs and they're definitely different, so it's being handled properly there. They do have the subtitles functioning the same as closed captions as opposed to regular subtitles though so if they're doing the same elsewhere, I can see how that would look like dubtitles.

I've been reading the manga when it debuted online and so far I've really gotten to like Mittens, she's such a great character who gets better as the story goes, she is such like a cat at times

Tsukasa really is rather dashing no the ice.
I'm glad Inori might be finding a community that accepts her, like in the club, though making friends with rival isn't always as easy as is the case with Mike/Mittens.
Nacchi and Mike's feistiness and personalities are adapted well into animation.
Mike thought Inori was relying too much on adults but then we see why Tsukasa was the perfect coach for her because he does tell her what she can do...but she makes it her choice how to do it because ultimately she needs to be the one to make these decisions. And either way he'll back her up 100% to victory. And Inori made the right choice for herself.
Who knew a dog chasing his tail could be so plot critical?

I guess I'm the outlier here, but I'm having a hard time warming up to Inori and wanting her to succeed. I get she's got self-esteem/confidence issues, but I wish she wanted to skate because she loves it and wants to do her best at it. Instead she only seems to be skating for the attention she hopes it will gain her, which is part of why she completely loses it when she actually is the center of attention but isn't perfect. I feel like she would be happy doing anything else that got her "ooh, you're so cool!" responses. She should just do that and save her mom a lot of money.

I think you missed a lot of things. She DOES love skating. She says herself in the first episode it's one of the few things she's not bad at, and wants to partake in it because it makes her happy. The show itself shows that skating is what makes her happy, even if she's not perfect at it.
