Yes, that's what she said. It would be a lot more convincing if she thought that as well. But almost all of her internal "get pumped to do this" dialog is how much she wants to win accolades and admiration (the Olympics is what she hopes will serve that up to her).

She loves skating so she wants to do well at it. These two things are not mutually exclusive. Not to mention she fears that if she isn't good enough her mother won't let her continue.

I get she's got self-esteem/confidence issues, but I wish she wanted to skate because she loves it and wants to do her best at it. Instead she only seems to be skating for the attention she hopes it will gain her, which is part of why she completely loses it when she actually is the center of attention but isn't perfect. I feel like she would be happy doing anything else that got her "ooh, you're so cool!" responses. She should just do that and save her mom a lot of money. |
Yeah like others have said, are we watching the same anime AT ALL here? Like, it's been SUPER CLEAR since episode 1 that Inori LOVES figure skating and wants to get better at it. The want for praise and validation is just something extra like getting strawberries in a taiyaki.

Shy, awkward introverts can still be incredibly competitive. But that doesn't preclude her loving skating.
She may also be experiencing the ADHD/autistic compulsion to be the world's leading authority on what ever it is she's interested in.

Since episode is out there's no real reason to not talk about it, but the anime all but openly states that Inori is neurodivergent and that it's a major reason for her problems in school and the anime GREATLY toned down the severity of the bullying and her moms harshness which really veered into "A Silent Voice" territory in how bad it was students calling her dumb and useless and rumoring that she eats worms, and her mom outright saying she'd be okay with her skating if she were more "normal"(That last one was one of the big things that made Tsukasa step in). It also took a HUGE toll on Inori's mom because she internalized all of it as a sign that she was a bad and failing parent(the fanbook states that she's VERY loving and doting, but also suffers from severe inferiority complex like Inori).

And this episode was outsourced. ENGI is in fact taking this seriously 100%. It's apparently caused a substantial uptick in sales.

For people who have read ahead in the manga where do we think the series will end?
I’m thinking after the 2nd contest just after the time skip where Inori wins the 5th grade contest and one step closer to novice
What do people think?

I thought ep4 did a very good job of showing this. First, her sister tells Inori that when she got home from Canada their mom didn't ask her how she was but rather immediately started gushing about Inori's skating. Second, her mom literally stayed up all night making Inoris costume. While she may have her own issues, I thought it was obvious that her mom loves and is incredibly proud of Inori, but she thinks she's protecting Inori from getting hurt.

I'm glad Inori's family are so supportive. Her big sister utterly adores her and isn't projecting any bitter skating failures on Inori, her dad is a bumbling dad who wants to ditch a work meeting to watch her perform, and despite everything her mom always had her best interests at heart and seeing her daughter put her all into something has shown that she needs to step up as a mom and support Inori 100% in chasing her dream. And it's so beautiful.
Equally beautiful was Inori's performance. Just like she was inspired by her sister, she too in-turn inspired a little girl.
Coach Tsukasa the most GOAT coach of all time.
Engi might actually be redeeming themselves after all these years. I mean, the material and Jukki Hanada and the CG team are helping a ton, but still.
Inori made it to first place. Can she stay there?

I'm honestly shocked to see that the father is even in the picture. I am just too used to the absent father trope in anime.

I have a feeling Mittens is still going to win. But when she goes to gloat about how much better she is, she'll see Inori celebrating with her family, coaches and girls she skates with, and wonder why it feels like she lost. It would be a good learning experience/character development for her.

Whatever happens to Inori in the anime, remember reality can be much worse.

Really nice quote from the episode reddit.
Quote: | The author's grasp of what goes on in a child's mind is amazing. Inori, and now Mike's internal struggles are so real and relatable, and their coaches manage to provide exactly what they need.
Mike's refusal to conform to what adults want of her might be a hindrance in some situations, and many parent and teachers would try to "fix" it. Some might view her dejection after losing as a chance to reshape her behavior. But that's the kind of thing that leads to self-doubt, and learned helplessness. Mario isn't having any of that, she knows that Mike's boldness is her strength, and wants only to see Mike succeed not despite of it but because of it.
It's so cathartic to see adults who see children for exactly who they are, instead of projecting their own ideals and dreams onto them, and who nurture their confidence through understanding and patience. We all wish we had had adults like these in our lives. |

TBH, by putting two full skate routines into one episode it made the episode feel really short, like nothing much happened. Don't get me wrong, they were gorgeous, but when the credits started my first thought was 'that's it?'. It would probably be fine if I was binging and could just continue with the next episode, but week to week it left me feeling let down.
