I take issue with the author of the first letter claiming that "many animes contain sexually exploitated young girls and even boys". They're exploited in the context of their fictional universe, perhaps, but in real life, nobody's being exploited. You can't exploit non-existant people. The argument that lolicon or shotacon scenes/themes exploit children is wrong by definition.

The rant seemed just like an uncessary defense of some obscure anime. Maybe I'm missing something.

Ok, hopefully without starting another epic discussion about the ethical shades of lolicon, I would like to say that since there are no US releases containing "sexually exploitated young girls and boys" and by that I am guessing he is referring to those who look like they are under 18-animated-years-of-age-but-you-can-never-know-for-sure-because-they-have-no -ID, I (still) think the US distributors have nothing to worry about. There is no reason for anyone to go hide in shame as an anime fan.

So what do you say when someone looks at you and say "EWWW! You watch that cartoon porn with little girls in it? What are you like?"

Uhh, yeah. That rant made no sense whatsoever. It jumped from topic to topic. The only thing I could make out was that he liked Sister Princess, possibly a bit too much.

As for the whole "sexually exploited young girls" thing, we've been over this before in our numerous (and particularly heated) lolicon debates. I personally believe that if for whatever reason someone in the mainstream press decides to do any kind of investigative piece on anime fandom, the odds that they're going to focus entirely on the lolicon thing and paint us all with the pedo brush are extremely high. Just wait until Dateline NBC decides to run "To Catch An Otaku".

While that isn't necessarily going to happen - anime hasn't been popular enough recently to catch the attention of the mainstream press - I don't think it's entirely outside the realm of possibility.

It's something that I keep wondering. What happens when middle American and rightwingers who complain about video games and gay marrage find out what's in manga? It's something I'm itching to explore in a satrical comic. I've written out either a web comic or a fan comic / 'zine for a con based on that idea. The script needs polishing, but the baic ideas, jokes and characters are down.

As for the 'blogosphere' question, gee, isn't the whole point of blogs that they are biased? Blogs are soapboxes where it seems now everyone posts their opinions and they can be read across the globe. Hell, I have a blog and I sure the hell am biased. Every blog is. I thought that was the point, that everyone gets a soapbox to rant from.

AMEN! and rest in peace.

As for the rant. Wow. Just. Wow. I want to point out how many things were wrong in that rant, but perhaps on the planet the writer is from, it makes sense.

This Week's Rant wrote:
For one thing, even though the girls are of ages four (?) to sixteen (?), there could have been more nudity. I wouldn't have appreciated it, personally; but a lot of people don't go for this pure and wholesome crap. And while we're on the topic, one would think people might have a problem with a show where all the characters are underage. Could they have thrown in a short skirt wearing nurse, like Yayoi in Happy Lesson, or a Government Assassin, like X in Samurai X, or even a couple of goat hoarders?

First... yeah.. asking for more nudity of girls aged 4 to 16. Yeah. Not something you say so bluntly on this planet. Even I'll admit to looking or even buying some rather lolicon art, but, damn, have some tact.

Also.. who the hell is X in Samurai X? Please tell me he doesn't mean Kenshin and that the author realizes Kenshin is a guy.

Yeah, I sure hope it was all a joke because HURRR DON'T DO THIS

Shouldn't bias only count for instances like, for example, the wrestling promoter is biased in favor of large steroided macho guys with little to no wrestling talent? I don't see how bias factors in when someone is rating/reviewing shows that are their own taste. The bias is there, sure, but when does it become an issue?

If reviews were just a matter of taste, it wouldn't be an issue...but most serious-minded reviews at least attempt to address the qualities of a product and how other people might react to it, not just the reviewer's personal reaction. After all, reviews are a factor in one's decision to watch/purchase something, so you want the review to tell you whether you'll like it--knowing only how the reviewer felt is only useful if you know why they felt that way and whether you'll feel the same way. And if the reviewer can't overcome their bias to the point that they steer you wrong, they might lead you to buy something you don't like or miss something you might have otherwise checked out.

Well then, I think this reaction goes in the heart of the matter. Here is a perfectly innocent song about the wonder of little girls growing into fine adult women, and it gets misinterpreted into some unmentionable gross thing. Heck, there are videos in YouTube made by loving parents using this song! Same thing with Anime in the US.

how stereotypical.. this is quite racial, and crap! just because the person who made a cartoon isn't japanese, it's not anime? yeah it may have originated from Japan but that doesn't mean it's only anime if you're Japanese. i don't believe in this, i believe anyone has the ability to make anime. talk about bull!
even if hard-colded others don't see it as anime, it's still able to be just as great as any anime, and perhaps greater!
though Eminem was white and disapproved for being white, he was able to be just as great as any black rapper.
~btw the so called "Japanese" Anime you watch, most of them are done by Koreans!

Have I time-traveled back to January 2007? No? Then this must be a necropost. Locked.
