Actually, while Maeda may have popularized it, the OAVs Cream Lemon episode 3 "SF Chōjigen Densetsu Rall" (SF・超次元伝説ラル) and The Satisfaction (ザ・サティスファクション) both had phallic tentacles, as may Nikkatsu's Lolita Anime episode 1 "Uchiyama Aki no Obyoki Aki-chan" (ロリータアニメVol.1:内山亜紀のおビョーキ亜紀ちゃん; not to be confused with Wonder Kids' earlier Lolita Anime series). All were released in December 1984, while the Urotsukidoji manga was released in 1986.

This isn't say that Maeda did not invent tentacle porn independently, but that he certainly was not the first.

I checked The Satisfaction and SF Chōjigen Densetsu Rall. The former has two tentacles used to restrain the victim, but the demon's penis (giant, bumpy, , while unusual in other ways, is not a tentacle. Rall OTOH, definitely has phallic tentacles, but since the OAV entirely lacks the mosaic censorship—even of the (female) title character's genitals—the point of the exercise is ironically moot (except to the new fans of the genre). Strangely, the previous Cream Lemon episode, Escalation: Konya wa Hardcore, is mosaically censored.

Heh this article's timing is interesting. I was on on MAL a few days ago just searching around and the anime OAV of this series came up. The description sounded interesting but nearly every review or viewer description of it made to be one of the worst anime productions ever made, that only fueled my curiosity.

I personally enjoyed it even though it was obviously cut off sort before the story got really interesting but it was just so over the top and gory, it was like a some weird, cracked out Mask Rider/Guvyer. It's simply just an entertaining set of episodes (there are only 2, 30min ones).

Also the designs used in the anime were kind of cool, drawn in sort of a way like it was supposed to be an innocent shounen show on the surface, covering up how truly gory it was overall (or at lessen the impact at least unlike Shigurui).

Some scenes I still laugh about when thinking about it and probably won't ever forget for a while, i.e:
spoiler[
Kakugo slapping the demon nurse who tried to seduce him. The way that whole scene played out was just some comedy gold.

The scene in question ridiculous nature is further highlighted by the fact later on Kakugo starts developing feelings for the side main girl character after she simply cleaned his desk for him.

Well, that's 'cause Kakugo is a *M*A*N* (pronounced "MAHHN")! No way he's falling for some sexual seduction! He just loves watching women clean things! 0_o

I've heard of "Apocalypse Zero." It's one of the most loathed property among anime and manga critics. Every review of every version of this has been negative. I'm glad I didn't read this manga. I wouldn't have liked it either.

I'm not sure why people who like Apocalypse Zero still consider it "legendarily bad", considering all the goofy campy nonsense is clearly completely intentional.

Perhaps he tried to make some weird points through the story, yeah, but if you look at all the penis jokes and weird surreal hyper-violent nonsense, it's blatantly obvious that it's meant to be full of dark, over the top humor. I disagree with Jason because it doesn't HAVE to be either 'dead serious cool battle shonen' or 'complete insanity' - you can have elements of both.

This series has such a weird stigma attached to it. Imagine if older anime fans hadn't even caught a glimpse of it in the early 90s and it would've been discovered today, chances are it would've been viewed as something niche and hyper-violent but fun because today's Western anime fans have far more varied taste and tend to be more open to new things. I don't buy that "intentionally unrefined" (i.e. dick jokes and crazy gore and whatnot) inherently equals "objectively bad", so if you have fun with it it's silly to give it that tag.

Do you believe these 1984 and 1985 works may have influenced the tentacle-bonding scene in the 1986 "Guyver: Out of Control" OVA between Valcuria and Guyver II?

That sounds likely, but it's only my gut reaction.
