'Struth. $600 for a Blu-Ray upgrade to a perfectly acceptable and recent DVD release... I think not.

I'll consider the DVD release, but I'd need to see something of the physical extras first.
My real problem with Aniplex USA releases which needs to be overcome here is the fact that all the translations in their extra booklets, etc. are apparently done by people who don't speak English. Why?

Anyone happen to know if this had EngSubs? Probably doesn't matter. I'd be more likely to buy AoA's DVD LE than this.

I'm starting to take Aniplex less and less seriously. This is insane.

All the translations in their extra booklets, etc. are apparently done by people who don't speak English.

Randomly chosen example from the Bakemonogatari booklet:
Quote:
Disguising her courteous manner of speech, she [Mayoi] frequently unleashes offensively obsequious comments.
Huh?

It's not specified at this time. It would be foolish of them not to include EngSub considering how well the BD-Box LE sold.

@ ailblentyn

Interesting vocabulary, but the sentence does make sense and is consitent with her actions in the show. Where is the problem?

Actually Alan45, that sentence doesn't make sense. I'm not sure how someone can be "offensively obsequious." Also, I don't remember her being obsequious at all. I can't be sure, but I think what the translator was going for was that "she disguises her offensive comments by using a courteous manner of speech."

To begin with, I consider obsequious to be "obnoxiously humble". I can easily see it being offensive if you don't want it or it has a bite. I think they are using it to refer to the excessively polite formal speech the Japanese sometimes use. Since there is not a good English equivlent, I think it gets lost in translation. I've noticed in several manga where there are complaints about a character using polite or formal speech. I can see where someone being excessively formal could be irritating.

Yes, I guess "offensively obsequious" means annoyingly — or mockingly — humble forms of speech.

The force of "disguising" is totally opaque to me. And "unleashing" seems not quite the right word.

I'm sure the Japanese being translated here made perfect sense, but it seems as if someone sat down with a dictionary and produced a sentence that read cold is hard to interpret. How much cooler if the booklet had actually tried to explain succinctly to an English-speaking audience what was going on in her speech.

I agree they could have done better. However, I think they were trying to keep the text within the format of the original. In addition, I'm cynical enough to think that Anaplex was not going to go to any great lengths to provide something that was actually useful. The sentence did make sense though.

The days when we got liner notes like those from AnimEigo are long gone.

But what about the "disguising her courteous manner of speech?" If she is disguising it, it means she is NOT using a courteous manner of speech, right? So does that mean her words seem impolite, but actually are courteous? It's very confusing. And if you accept that there is something inherently offensive about being obsequious then saying something is "offensively obsequious" is redundant - like saying somebody is rudely impolite. Anyway you slice it, it ain't good English.

@Blood-

I'm going to let this one go. We could argue the meaning of a meaningless sentence forever. While it is not the clearest or best written sentence, as far as I can tell, it is correct English if not good English. In any case what is wrong with being repetively redundant? Razz

I agree that there's no point arguing this — and I'm impressed rather than disbelieving vis-à-vis Alan45's ability to perceive the original meaning through the mist of the language — but I do need to agree with Blood. I think if you gave a sentence like that to a group of educated English speakers and asked them to paraphrase it, you'd end up with a number of different interpretations and a lot of head-scratching!

I never did like Gurren Lagann but at this stratospheric price I hate it-what the hell is Aniplex thinking-or maybe they aren't?
