After reading this article, I'm interested in reading After School Nightmare, but my library has all but the 9th volume. (Curses!) Those of you who have read it, would skipping the second-to-last volume make the ending completely incomprehensible?

Does anyone know if there some Manga publisher might pick and reprint Setona works and Yumi Tamura Basara as well I know the problem when Central Park Media close shop it left me hanging with a manga series of which I have the first four or five volumes which I have rented the anime except for the last part because they went out of business before the video could stock them. I would like to have some manga publisher pick up the Cool Devices four volume series as well I enjoyed the anime series and would love to read the original manga series Sad

Incomprehensible? Maybe not. But you're going to loose a hell of a lot of the story and emotional moments. You might be able to get by if you're intuitive and have access to plot summaries, if you're not the type to look for scans.
And lucky you for having such a great Library selection.

Such a shame I never had Vol. 5 in stock near me... so I never finished it.

Thanks for the reply, Sewingrose! I suppose I'll have to decide what to do once I get to vol. 9.

And yes, I am lucky that my library system has a very decent supply of manga!

I'm so glad House of 1000 Manga reviewed this series. It is one of the first manga I read; I discovered it in my local library a couple of years ago when I was first dipping my toe in to the medium. I had a lot of preconceived notions about manga being either pornographic, or for 12-year olds, or-- *shudder*--pornography featuring 12-year-olds. Then I read After School Nightmare and discovered that manga, like books, movies, radio plays, was just a different vehicle to deliver great storytelling, beautiful imagery, and a fascinating window in to a different culture.

So now I am a voracious consumer of manga, which brings me to my second point. As a grown-ass woman with a husband, children, and a mortgage, it's hard to hold on to my dignity when I find myself in the "Teen Alcove" of my local library, tripping over backpacks to find Vol. 9 Love.Com. So thank you, ANN and Jason Thompson, for all of your thoughtful and well-researched criticism and discussion-- it helps me feel less helplessly dorky!

Imagine if you're a grown-ass man - they'd probably call the police on you! Laughing

I really liked this series, especially the art and the story.

spoiler[ When I first read it, I was still confused over why the characters had to undergo all that trauma (especially Kureha and Sou; the weird sister/incest thing was so creepy) just to be born, but when I thought about it, it was not so much about overcoming trauma, but more about finding a way to cope with it, and finding an identity.

That's why even people who don't "solve" their problems, like the mermaid girl or the giraffe guy (can't remember their names) can still graduate; they may not be free of their problems, but they have established an identity for themselves, and are strong enough to live with themselves. Sure, they may end up being jerks in the "real world", but they decided that for themselves when they chose to graduate.]

It's a very inspiring series, and I loved the ending; it blew my mind.

I absolutely adore this mature, twisted, psychologically thought-provoking series. I've gotten a hold of most of the manga (still need 4, 5, 6 and 9) and it's one I'd recommend to anyone with an open mind.

Quote:
Setona Mizushiro's other translated manga X-Day was pretty good, but I hope someone translates more of her manga, because in After School Nightmare she really surprised me, in a good way. Just when I thought I knew what it all meant, I realized I was wrong.

I found and enjoyed that 2-volume manga as well, so I can wholeheartedly agree with you there.

Other series of hers I've seen online or heard about that I'd LOVE to own/read for real include Heartbroken Chocolatier, Alice of The Black Rose, The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese, Dousei Ai, Nounai Poison Berry, Higan Sugimade, and Girl Doll.
