Just out of curiosity, was that an Angry Video Game Nerd reference?

Yes, it is. Very Happy If he were into anime related things I could only dream of the colorful words he'd say about this.

Also- we're really close to the street date of the book being released. I'm not sure how it works with books but wouldn't a lot of these have already been printed? Are they just going to throw them away? Put them in a few boxes and push them in the back of a closet?

I'm not sure how many readers of ANN also check out AnimeonDVD.com, but they had an interesting piece of information added to their announcement of Nymphet's cancellation.

Quote:
Coming at the same time is apparently a new attack on civil liberties as LiveJournal is removing a large number of communities and journals related to taboo subjects as well as advising users who have Interests such as yaoi, rape, and shouta, or the names of shows and books sometimes associated with such terms to remove them as quickly as possible which implies that their accounts could be removed as well. An online "vigilante" group apparently declared war on LiveJournal last week over such interests and LiveJournal's corporate legal side. As of this writing nobody has full confirmed who is involved with this sudden rash of removals but JournelFen has a large amount of reading material on the subject.

While not a fan of Nymphet of the Shouta genre, I am a large fan of yaoi, so this bit of news is also rather disheartening. If they start to go after LJ, then they may start to focus on yaoi & other taboo genre books and such sold in bookstores.

Holy crap, I guess you can go broke underestimating the taste of the American public. At least on a very limited scale and a very extreme case. Hallebleepinglujah.

This isn't censorship. It's a market decision; Seven Seas decided that the money they'd make from selling the manga was less than what they'd lose because of the fallout from its content. Given the potential risk of this series ending up on the six o' clock news somewhere and blowing up from there (with its staggeringly poorly-chosen English title to boot), the potential profit from selling a decent-sized run of comic books probably didn't look like such a great bet. Whether that was a sound or unsound business decision, nobody at ANN was threatening to throw them in prison for choosing the other way.

Is this a joke?! (I sure hope it is). What the hell? Now we have vigilante groups going after manga and anime? What's next? The public execution og homosexuals? Stoning the otakus? It's times like this I'm sorry to be part of this society.

I think it was good decision to cancel this release. I'm fairly open minded, and I know it's a comedy but the few scanned pages I have seen were a little out of line. For example on the cover from the first manga the girl is reaching in her underpants! I'm not one of those americans who's got a narrow mind, but to see a fictional girl practically masturbate on the cover of a manga is too much for me.
It may be fun to see a girl embarrass her teacher, but she can also do that in a not-overly sexualized way.

That's an interesting piece of information indeed. That's just plain scary.

I'm not a fan of Nymphet or shouta (or even yaoi), but if this means that they will go after yuri too, then I'm very worried. They'd better not touch my yuri (what precious little there is)!

EDIT: Added "what precious little ...."

Reaching in her underwear? See THIS is what I was talking about. It's THIS kind of obsesed people that see every little thing as sexual that make it hard for the rest of us. If you had looked a little better you would have seen that she is holding her skirt down, something that anyone who takes a good look will see, especialy since you can hee a prat of her hand above the skirt. But you people only see what you want to see, don't you?

Pride before entertainment, after all.
How about we start with Battle Royale? I heard that manga had blood in it. I'm scared!

Lovely. Let's hope Del Rey and TokyoPop follow in suit with Negima and Strawberry Marshmallow... because ya know, IT'S THE SAME DAMM THING!

*starts making a list of every little brat who complained about this release based on the summary alone*

I agree.

I probably would not have bought this title anyway, but that's just because I'm not a big manga reader and I have to have more than just a little interest stemming from heated debates on a forum to check something out, but I strongly believe Seven Seas canceled this series over money. As I was telling a friend earlier, they saw smoke and started to worry that their money may burn. So they put it on hiatus while they investigated the potential risks/rewards before spending more than what they already have on licensing it. If they got word form many distributors saying, "sure, we'll sell it," then they would have forgone any internet hate and pushed the book. But if they got more, "no, we ain't touching that," and then discovered this series for what it is, a niche product that may not have sold 500 copies nationwide, then it makes sense to cancel it.

One of these things is not like the other. Sexualizing kids is bad enough, but are we really going to call rape an innocuous "interest"?

To some people it apparently is. I'm suprised that there aren't people taking Seven Seas to task for not publishing tentacle rape porn. I'm sure that only the pervasive crushing social mores of this opressive society are stopping them providing this crucial part of the anime experience.

I agree with the point you're making, but Jason DeAngelis said himself in his previous letter to ANN that "thousands" of people (such as myself) had already placed orders for this.

I heard somebody mentioning earlier that they'd seen this in a book store? If anyone happens to get their hands on a rogue copy, feel free to PM me. You might just land yourself a tidy sum. Wink
