It's like ecchi & hentai--I usually see both terms translated as pervert or something along those lines when they pop up in an anime.

Duh? That's what they literally mean in the situations you've noticed it. But it's become common terminology for English speakers to use hentai to refer to manga/anime pr0n. It doesn't really change anything on either side of the language barrier though.

And it's not like this sort of thing is a one-sided thing for English speakers. I mean god, the Japanese butcher English into their vocabulary on a regular basis.

Yes, I know they butcher it. I always listen in Japanese when there's English spoken to see how well the actor handles it since some people are so picky on how our guys handle it. I just assumed if a girl screams "ecchi" it's a bit milder than when she screams "hentai" not unlike English words have milder & worse slangs (like jerk vs creep).

The difference is they adapt english words for their own pop culture in and out of anime fandom as opposed to the fact that they're copying a words use and somewhere along the lines it may retain older meanings or be changed slightly.

It's just the shonen ai camp seems so adamant about retaining the term to distance itself from harcore when it does all appear in BL anthologies in Japan & the "boys" in the story can be far from boys (middle-aged men even). I usually classify them as sweet (what most would call shonen ai) & porn. Why mince words? A lot of the fans seem to want the porn & in fact I made it thru Othello this weekend & was rather amazed at the author talking about how hard it was to dp all the sex scenes & maybe I was reading too fast, but I'd put Othello far more into the PG catagory-rather tame smut-wise, though I very much enjoyed the stories.

Rofl they can also be minors ;.;

We do it with PG-13, R, and X rated movies, why not with comics? And you're not gonna find an age rating on everything.

And it's less hating on America as it is more hating on our draconian attitudes about sex. As for the age of the material, those 2 came to mind. I often don't pay attention to terms all that much because I'm reading the subtitles, listening in English & watching the action, so I don't always notice they might have used yaoi as a term. It may have popped up in Bobobo, but that one flies by so quickly & is so much like Airplane (throw everything at the wall to see if anything sticks), I'm not sure. I'd have to go back to check if I care. I usually look for it because I'm sick to death of being corrected on saying it wrong (I say yah-o-ee, which always gets corrected by the yowie users) so I'm usually looking for stand-outs like Hare+Guu

Antiquated and prudish perhaps, but draconian (ie rigorous, harsh, severe, curel)? That's a little bit out in left field >.>

Well the point here is that you're talking about a term that has most likelly evolved over time. Excel saga for example Finished a little over 7 years ago; even haru+guu is six years old. It's certainly possible that within six years that Yaoi may have dropped out of the Japanese vocabulary. Not saying that it has, but merely that if you wish to a prove a point on that topic new stuff is obviously better.

I know on the boy thing. I get some of the Japanese anthologies & get a tad nervous about how young some of the characters look...
I prefer the You Higuri/Makoto Tateno 20-30-something look myself.

The yaoi companies are pretty good about the age thing because they don't want to get in trouble. Kitty is usually pretty blatant "ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR ANYONE UNDER 18". I received my Right Stuf care package last night with 7 DMP titles & only the YA For Young Adults 16+ Invisible Boy was not plastic-wrapped. Free Fall Romance, Melted Love & the other M For Mature Audiences 18+ were wrapped. They all seem very cautious at cons about trying to keep the underage crowd safely at bay. Yes, they have to know underage teens are aquiring their material, but they're covered by the blanket mature warning not like the ages old 13 yr old boys with their stash of Playboys-parents can't really blame Playboy--maybe the store the kid bought it off or the adult that purchased it for them. I know they asked for ID at most of the Comic-con booths from anyone who looked too young to buy the material.

Tokyopop/Blu has had complaints thrown in their direction for not looking at the project as a whole so the first often tamer volume may have a 12+ rating, but then later volumes pop up to 16+ or 18+ so allegedly they were working on the issue--why should a teen start a manga their parent won't let them complete? Look at Fake where everything was crammed into like the last chapter (& Ryo, right?) THe first few volumes had little in the way of sex. But that also means the first couple volumes of an 801 might be decidedly in the realm of teen until the heat gets kicked up, but again, why tease the teen audience with title rated in their range only for them to get to Borders to find the final volume rated M?
Frankly, I questioned Menkui landing under Blu when Loveless & Wild Adaptor are TP. They seem shakier on their divisions.

I've not gotten to Just My Luck. I have those 7 volumes(6 1/2-halfway thru Invisible Boy), Ordinary Crush & Wild Adaptor 3 to get thru (& Hoshin Engi 3). And personally, I often enjoy the stuff with less sex as having better stories, although some are mindnumbingly inanely the same as the last. Invisible Boy looks interesting. Othello was interesting, though somewhat of a "Can we throw a bit more misery onto the survivng teen?" (And Diabolo was a better story for a teen abused sexually by a parent. And Saiyuki.) Loveless is incredible & we've had no sex, but that last volume--poor Soubi. And the last Zero-Sum(11/07)...the chapter ends right at the confrontation.

I didn't even know that the Welcome to the NHK! novel was getting translated, so this is really exciting. Hopefully I can deal with the circular rambling, because I definitely would like to see the original source material for this excellent series.

I've just finished reading it this evening and it's certainly well worth getting hold of. As good as the manga is, the novel is better.

I'd go so far as to say that it has rather more in common with serious Japanese literature like the works of Natsuo Kirino or Ryu Murakami than with the other (mostly teen-orientated) "light novels" Tokyopop have been putting out.

Probably because Welcome to the NHK isn't a light novel. It was (obviously, given the content) written for adults, and published under Kadokawa's mainstream label.

I recently read the book in Japanese, and was really impressed. The control over the character's voice, the authenticity of it; these I expected, but the way the plot just refused to let itself go to the cliches if often seemed headed for was really impressive; led up to a very satisfying climax.
