Anyways---

The western stuff I've seen can be scary. I picked up Incubus Vol 1 & it looks like Batman yaoi so I'll gamble that's part of the issue. I haven't been too interested in much of the Western stuff because of the art style.

How did this turn into a loli debate?

Because one of the posters alluded to lolicon in her slippery slope argument and everyone else fell into the trap.

Legally are fanfics child porn? I don't really care since I don't read them, but they do fan the fires, don't they?

Well, you presented it as fact in your above post, and it's not true.

Fan what fires? That's as bad as the slippery slope argument the other person was presenting. Fiction is merely words, and to my knowledge words, except in extreme cases, are still protected by the US Constitution.

If one needs to take a course in law to know if it's legal to possess this or that, is it worth the effort? Isn't it a whole lot easier to go with what is ok? If a PTA mom comes across a fanfic of YugiXSeto, is she going to be ok because it's prose & not art? Because we all know moms don't read stuff like their kid's diaries, right?

It is a mom's right and responsibility to determine what is appropriate for a child. Which has nothing to do with whether or not certain adult materials are appropriate for adults.

Whether or not people are comfortable with fiction of any sort, and frankly I personally detest any with sexually graphic violence or with minors engaging in sex, it is a protected speech. It doesn't take a law degree to remember that.

MY point was the argument only images are porn. Suzie reads BakuraXMarik fanfics, likes the pairing, draws said pairing. Maybe Annie reads "Ed's Torrid Affair With Roy" & decides to illustrate it, posting the pix on her MySpace or Deviant art, so when I put in Full Metal Alchemist on image search there her fanart is in all it's glory. Fueling the fire, no? I never, ever thought about LXLight until someone tossed the pairing at me & we debated it awhile. (I couldn't se Light submitting to a guy, but now I can see it) And yeah, I've seen the images from the game so it's obviously a popular pairing.

I gave up on fanfics myself a good 4-5 yrs ago not because they were porn, but because overall, they are pretty bad. As a working stiff & single mom, I don't have time to blow reading them to find the few really good ones amidst the horrid ones.

As a headbanger who lived thru the whole PMRC debaucle, I say you're wrong. Yes, parents have the right to police what their kids have access to. However, the total insanity of Al Gore asking if it's reasonable to expect a parent listen to every record in their child's collection I would say "yes" & totally agree with Dee Snider's reply that "Being a parent isn't a reasonable thing".

So, no, I really don't want some senator's bored wife looking for a crusade finding fanfics of a cartoon like YuGiOh her child watched, becoming upset & launching a campaign against yaoi or anime or something. I don't trust those types of people not to mess stuff up which is why I say it's better to stay off their radar entirely. Who would think they could get so much mileage off rock music? Anime's having problems right now as it is with the while monetary issue, Geneon abandoning us, etc. It really doesn't need any more negative assistance at this time.

I'm having a hard time remembering a post where you don't mention your kids or the fact that you're a single mom or your age.

Then you're not paying attention

I only have 1 kid.

And there are 2 posts in the last page where I don't mention it. And I don't think I mention being a widow that often so the single mom comes up less than being a mom & the mom stuff mostly comes up from my interactions with my teen & her anime-loving friends. They happen to be my most immediate study group for teen behavior, in particular the large number who download

My co-worker aren't into anime, so they only come up as ref for the ignorant masses who wouldn't know anime if it bit them on the toe (Co-worker brought her older teen daughter into work & the girl, looking at my cubicle, commented "I love Boondocks" I smiled politely & agreed it was an anime-styled American cartoon.) The ones who asked me about anime when it came up in Westerfield's trial. As I say, the less outsiders scrutinize anime & manga, the better because I don't trust what can come out of protecting the youth of America from the horrors of whatever some group's gotten the ears of their congressmen to believe

But it's part of who I am. I was sort of brought up with the "give credit where credit's due/cite your source" so if it's my teen or one of her friends, they get cited. You may also note, I say stuff like "In a Newtype article I read" or "In Animerica's girlpower issue" or "In a sidetalk column this or that manga-ka said"
We know Mohawk's a daddy. He doesn't seem to mind mentioning it. There's a soccermom who's posted on one of the debates....If I thought about it, I could probably give you more, but it's late & I got a box of yaoi in the mail.
