Soyasushi Productions apparently has some really awesome short VNs and some longer ones, all free. Here are some that I really liked:
Ribbon of Green A story about two girls who used to be friends, but were torn apart by a highly competitive environment. Very touching. RE: Prince of Nigeria Hilariously different from the creator's previous game. This is sheer comedic gold. Basically, it's about a girl who treats every Nigerian scam e-mail as a love letter. |

http://www.renpy.org is a site for a freeware engine for making these things, and you can find links there to tons of games (some free; some not) that people have made with it.
As these are mostly fan-made OEL works, the quality varies...incredibly, but there was one called "That Cheap and Sacred Thing" that I found rather moving. It's more a story with pictures than a game, but I thought it was a fine little SF tale in its own right. |

Just found this one.
Phenomeno is a free visual novel developed by Nitro+ and illustrated by Yoshitoshi ABe. I'm actually downloading it right at this moment. Don't know if it's any good, but it's Yoshitoshi ABe, so it would be a sin not to check it out. |
