Why they have it on adult swim I'm assuming is because the show was pretty much for everyone in Japan, except a little more on the mature side. Since it's a grown guy stuck in a kids body, it's not that easy to target to just the kid audience.

*recalls Matantei Loki* Oi, I love that show, but it was so obviously inspired by Detective Conan. Anime hyper Guys stuck in kids bodies, going off to solve mysteries.

I agree. That cover make him look more like he belongs at a village people concert. Note to anime companies: Less modification is more!!

I'm not really seeing what the big issue here is. I was surprised when I found out the title was changed too, but it's just a title, not the end of the world.

The show features lots of Japanese names, many of which sound similar to Western ears, making it hard to keep track of who's who. And in a show where it's important to keep track of characters, remembering characters' names is important. For the average TV viewer, I think it's a good thing that the names aren't all weird-sounding ones that would likely wind up mispronounced anyway.

And for the real fans of the series, there's the DVDs with the literal subtitle tracks, with all the original names intact, even with the san and sama and kun and all those crazy suffixes.

So the casual viewers get a cool show that's accessible to them, and the bigger fans get their literal translations that are true to the original. What's there not to like? I just don't get why people always have to be so negative. It's entertainment, have fun.

Am I the only person who is more amused than dismayed by this whole thing? One of my friends is an avid fan of this show and she had quite the spazzfest last night.

Wow, so the names are changed. It says in the newspost that everything except the title is going to be the same in the sub, and a lot of people are going to buy the DVDs and just watch the sub anyway, so I don't see the issue here.

The title change is unfortunate, but with legal matters what are you going to do? *shrugs* Oh well.

I misread the name "Richard Moore" as "Roger Moore." God, the Bond jokes just don't stop today. x____x

I've never seen it, but I was quite sure that it WAS aimed at a young audience. why air it after midnight? Especially with its great popularity in Japan and amongst western otaku.

I don't really have an interest in it either way...just seems really weird.

It was aimed at a general audience, including both children and adults. It's a very popular show in Japan and consistently gets high ratings. However, the content fond in "Conan" (now "Case Closed") is just too much for American kids TV. The show has a lot of violence that is just too intense for American standards - for example, a preteen girl is thrown into the back of a trunk, lying next to a severed human head, and a man sadistically shoots a woman in areas of her body to let her bleed to death. Fox Kids once tried to bring the show over to American kids TV, but they found out they couldn't because it was just too graphic.

Two different countries, two different sets of standards.

As would I. Just out of personal curiosity, and not to stir up trouble. Is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's last name "Conan Doyle" or just "Doyle"?

To me, Case Closed isn't that bad a title. Sure, I liked Detective Conan, and both immediately get across the point that it's a detective show.

Personally, I love the show, and I applaud FUNimation to licensing one of the longest-running animes out there. It shows dedication to work on 350+ episodes, not including the numerous specials and 6+ Movies. Bravo!

And considering the quality of the dubs from Fruits Basket, I might actually see how the dubs turn out.

...Come to think of it, now I'm wondering if they're considering re-dubbing the opening and ending songs, a la Fruits Basket...

Changing the names for the dub when it's going to be aired in Adult Swim confuses me, tho...

I will be picking this up. (And Kiddy Grade, too)

Yeah, relax people. This could of been a heck of a lot worse. Sides with name changes, you can tell the difference between the newbies and the otakus ^^. I wonder if that' a good thing hehe.

What, are they afraid Conan O Brien is gonna sue?

ROFL Laughing ! With idiots at Fox News suing Al Franken you never know what's gonna happen Rolling Eyes .
Anyway, I can understand why the would be forced to change the series' title due to some legal issues (though I think that it's a lie. It's not like this show is called Lupin III or anything). However, there are no excuses for changing the character's names. It's confusing, stupid and I absolutely hate it!
To those who say that I can always buy the DVDs of the show which have subtitles with unchanged names (which is not even the case when 4kids releases DVDs of their shows) I say this: I pay for cable! Therefore I have a right to expect certain things and voice my opinion.
The whole reason why Asian actors are forced to change their names when they come to US is because it this society having an Asian name can be a disadvantage (they are not doing it because they want to). This is something I'd like to see changed and releasing this show with (even minor changes) makes the situtation even worse by making making people think that it's the way it should be (let's not confuse cause and effect here).

I wasn't talking about actors, I was talking about the average joe. Also, I never said it was right. The reasoning seems to be similar, though. It can be difficult for some people to deal with asian names (or anybody's names for that matter Wink ).

Asian Actors (or any other foreign celebrity who gets a name change) change their names often because of the difficulty of intended foreign audiences to recognize some cultural names--which may have been what you were trying to say, but which wasn't made very clear in your post.

Xiu Xiang looks rather odd in print to myself, and I've been watching and reading subbed asian films and animation for a while now. Johnny Xiang, while it isn't their real name, allows for better international recognition outside of their own culture.

I mean, which would you recognize easier: Lee Hsiao Lung or Bruce Lee?

I wouldn't have any problems recongnizing either of those names.
Now the point I was trying to make is that as long as shows will continue to change character's names the general public will have trouble remembering them. Notice how this is not an issue for anime fans who watch subtitles. It proves that it doesen't take long for people to get used to asian to Asian names.

But aren't there several American actors with American names that change them to sound "cooler" or whatever?

What sounds better:

John Johnson starring in...

-or-

Spike Alberts starring in...

?

It's not the same. Plus they change their names out of their own free will. It's not like they are forced to change them (I hope).
P.S. I don't find name Spike Alberts to be particularly cool.

"Case Closed" is the worst title evar.

At least the name is actually relevant to the content of the show. I could think of some really good name changes

Ikkitousen - "Strength of a Thousand" For a manga about hot babes that fight? I thought this would of been more serious!
Battle Vixens - Hmmm... Twisted Evil

POWER! - Uhhh...lost me on this one...
Girl Got Game - Yo go gurl-fwiend! rofl...

Perosonally, I don't think anything will ever "top" Samurai X. Whenever I see this title I want to start going around smashing staff.
