I was identifying with the words "academic" and "professional" until the part about there being a "costume fashion show."

This con sounds like it took the craziest ideas from the animecons ML and decided they could run an actual con this way (especially with that harebrained pricing scheme). Running a con with unproven and unresearched ideas - isn't this how these same Anime Boston people got 10-hour lines?

No that is what you get when you use only four automatic reg. machines for a crowd of 10+ k attendees.I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but even i know that is a diaster waiting to happen.
Now i might check out the con(online at least).Kinda of a interesting idea but a little iffy on the price point.

This convention sounds like my kind of convention to me. The words "academic" and "professional" certainly got my attention. It must be the New England thing. Anyway as an adult, I got tired of usual Anime convention scenes where kids, both teenagers and pre-teens, running around thinking they're "own" the anime. I really don't like cosplayers with their weird behaviors and poorly made costumes who are thinking that they're the hottest thing.

I can imagine so many wonderful possibilities with this convention. For me, this could be the place where I can talk about technical aspect of animation freely with open minded adults. I'm hoping to see in depth panels where Japanese animation professionals can talk and show their works similar to Bravo Channel's "Inside actor's studio". It would be really nice for academics coming up with interesting lectures for both fans and non-fans about art history behind the Japanese animation.

If it's possible, it would be really nice to see gallery showing of studio arts like layouts, key animations, background paintings. It's more appropriate to convention like this.

As trade show, this could be the place to showcase the best Japanese animations based on their artistic merit rather than passing fad. This convention may offer attendees to discover forgotten hidden jewels of Anime of the past with mature interaction among different generations.

These are my wishes, so don't take it literally. But It doesn't hurt to imagine.

Enter the hostile elitist.

Although it's more in theory than practice, academics disagree professionally without resorting to personal attacks. Again, in theory (goodness knows I know enough "academicians" who are totally unprofessional).

If I sound like elitist, I apologize. It wasn't my intention to label kids in a negative way. You may be right. I haven't consider the possibility of hostile elitist who will think he or she has better knowledge on this subject than normal fans. I've met this elitist at Wonder Con in San Francisco who had this relentless downplaying tone which doesn't allow me to say much. The subject was about influence of American animation on Osamu Tezuka. I do understand what elitist are capable of.

It's not easy to talk about animation with kids due to generation gap. What kids' interested are may differ from adult's. A good friend of mine, had this wonderful panel about animation production process at anime convention. Except few adults, I haven't seen one single kid who actually visit the panel. It tells one thing: Most kids are not interested in not-so-glamorous side of anime, which animation making. Adults are much more receptive because it can be interesting learning experience to them. It may not attract most adults, but it's perfectly relevant subject matter. After all, Anime is just Japanese made animation.
We know that a convention is where people can enjoy themselves socializing while gaining new insight about their hobby or their profession.

I haven't thought about that! It would be unfortunate to see academics bickering about their own views on Japanese animation. If academics aren't going to be professional about their lectures and whatever, then isn't better to have more industry professionals to present their knowledge?

Sorry, had to do it.

Still, I kinda think they could've done better with the planning. Am I the only one here that thinks it should've been better off somewhere else?
