Why can't the adults and teens get together to discuss manga?
I wonder if they would have turned away someone who was in their earler twenties as well. It shouldn't matter. I mean, do they have certain hours of the day where the library is open to teens only? |

And to think, it was only 10 years ago that it was the other way around and a lot of anime clubs had minimum age requirements. Irony wins again!

Well, it was a 43 year old guy trying to show some of his "personal" collection to a bunch of teenagers and kids in the "storytime" room...
Sounds fishy to me  .

LOL! I remember when there was a big hoopla at the library I work at when they wouldn't let a 22 year old keep coming to the (clearly advertised) TEEN Anime Club. We thought it was creepy because he kept hitting on all the 14 year old fangirls and one time I heard him say "Well I would be your Sesshoumaru..." I almost died laughing before I started crying.
Point being, yeah, adults do not need to be hanging out at teen events...if they want to have stimulating conversation about manga they can start an adult club. To sue a library's manga club...my god, how much of a loser do you have to be? |

On the one hand I agree that the inevitable 40-something year-old fan who shows up to the anime (or in this case manga) club meeting is almost always creepy (as in "pedophile vibe") and/or incredibly annoying. On the other hand, there's a whole lot of people in their teens to twenties that are into the exact same creepy pedobait stuff as they are. That is to say, they'd click "yes" on those "do you watch anime in the dark?" banners like the one that appeared as I was viewing this very thread. Here's a hint, clubs of the world: stop going crazy for moe garbage like Moon Phase or whatever and the people these titles are targeted to will stop showing up.
The concept of adult-oriented clubs and gatherings for anime and manga is virtually nonexistent, at least ones that aren't just entirely devoted to porn (though even those are largely populated by minors if yaoi fandom is anything to go by). People know the name "Providence Anime Conference" on the sole grounds that it is the ONLY ANIME CON IN THE COUNTRY that will--not even "is," "will" since it doesn't yet exist!--consider the viability of such a thing. So while it's fine for your knee-jerk reaction to be "man, this is stupid and why doesn't that loser just go away"...where else is there for them to go, exactly? I'm in my 20s. That effectively makes me too old to go to the local anime club or manga club meetings as a non-officer since I'd stick out like a sore thumb. Heh. One of the libraries I used to visit had a lot of manga, but they kept it in the teen room, which had giant sign near the door saying something like "Only teenagers 13-17 allowed inside!"
I could never figure out if it was serious or not, but I felt guilty everytime I checked something out. |

Be fair - it was a misunderstanding. As mentioned in the article, the club was apparently not advertised as being "teen only". I've always thought one of the greatest aspects of the anime/manga fan scene is how there's such a wide range of people into it, including people who are younger and older. Some of the coolest people I've ever met have been anime fans over twice my age at clubs and conventions. This particular issue just seems like it was an unfortunate case of miscommunication, but based on some of the reactions its garnered, I do think it helps to remind people that the issue of age discrimination within the fanbase is a real one. I have to admit, I've gotten awfully tired of seeing teenagers stereotype older manga fans as "pathetic" or "desperate pedophiles", as if they themselves will never age. |

My library puts their manga in two places... teen section and adult section. But the cooler manga are in the teen section~~~ D:
That wasn't nice not to allow the guy to attend. If he showed up and started talking about hentai, then yes, kick him out. Then again, this guy must have taken it REALLY personal for him to go that far... I haven't come across too many older anime fans 30+ but majority-wise i became good friends with them and had no problem talking about old and new anime. Then i come across the occasional old pervert that watches only hentai and i want to cry. . . . . |

i hit 30 this year...
and my main hobby is still anime...and i do know what not to do with younger audience...talking hentai during middle of the day with teenagers is DEFINITELY a no-no...what kind of moron/pedophile would do something like that? this reminds me of one event from Project A-Kon several years ago when i was about 20-21-ish...i cant' remember but i look younger than my actual age and most people thought i was 18 at that time...anywho, i was eating breakfast at the hotel restaurant while reading newly acquired artbook from Masamune Shirow, i believe it was second Intron Depot....a rather large and much older gentleman walked by my table and saw the artbook and recognized it...i don't remember his EXACT words but it was something like "Too bad he doesn't do hentai" or something in that nature...i felt uncomfortable and just looked at him strangely while he walked away... what's with getting older and being hornier with anime fans? i've heard of "dirty old men" but with anime fans, it seems it's definitely true.... god i hope i don't turn out like that.... |

At our university's anime club we have attendants ranging between high school students to people in their 30s and 40s. Never been any conflicts as a result. Just saying.

Seems like a big misunderstanding mostly.
If there was nothing about an age limit then its perfectly normal for a manga fan of any age to attend a manga club. From the library's perspective it probably seemed pretty creepy though. If they didn't bother posting an age limit, I would guess that they just kind of assumed it was something for teens. That makes it seem even weirder when an older person shows up. |

Kind of funny seeing this considering I just had a conversation a couple days ago with a close friend of mine who is a branch manager for a library where I live (not the one in the story) about this very thing. She was saying they will also be starting an anime/manga club with the same policy of teens only and even though they have gotten a few adults who were interested they were turned away because the purpose of the club was for teens. She also said the same thing about opening an anime/manga club for adults if enough people were interested and her library also has a series of clubs and programs for teens like the one in the article.
While I understand where this 43 year old guy is coming from (no age limit posted and he lugged his collection out there only to get turned away) I think he should really try to be a bit more understanding as I think all in all it's pretty standard fare for libraries to have most activities like this be focused around teens. |
