Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa now Hollywood. An actual Japanese actor in your remake of a japanese manga/anime film? Let's not get crazy now or else you'll tarnish your beautiful white wash record.

This is actually a great casting choice, even if you ignore his race. He's a much better fit than Oldman!

this is great news I hope he takes it, now for the two main roles if they at least got Asians I would be happy like maybe John Cho personally I think he would make a good Kaneda, it's just hard thinking of someone for Tetsuo.

So they get ONE Japanese actor, it's a start but it's still a long way to make any rational person want to watch this movie for any reason besides wanting to see what a piece of crap it's gonna be.
I'm not touching it with a 60-foot pole, Hollywood can stick it unless they go old school and stop making every goddamn movie based on comics, cartoons or anything. |

It doesn't matter that the guy is Japanese.
Even though this is based on a Japanese manga/anime, set in a futuristic Tokyo, this film is actually going to be an adaption BASED on the source material. It is not an exact replica in live-action. Once people understand that, we can start sitting back and see what sort of actors are on-board and potentially what sort of film this is going to turn out to be. All that aside, a great casting choice. This guy is a really good actor and has had the experience with Inception of a top-class Hollywood production. Fingers crossed this is another one. |

Not only is he an excellent actor he could carry off having the colonel's short haircut. After all he looks pretty good with his head shaved in Baian (which is avail from Media Blasters).

LOL, agreed. If Watanabe turns it down I guess Liam Neeson is next on the list. Or maybe they'll ask Katie Holmes to play Kei. |
