Nice entry into the ANN fold. A game column. I didn't get a chance to comment on the last comment.

Ah yes, 'Rhapsody A Musical Adventure'. I remember that game. I still have my PS1 game. I'm kind of shocked that NIS America is going to release that game here. Are you sure? Since the PS1 version did so poorly. It wasn't a game that appealed to the masses. Maybe there's a chance that if they're putting this remake out on the DS, then they may follow suit with the sequels. I don't mind playing the game again. Hell, I've played both US and import versions.

Y'know I should consider 'Disgaea'. I considered it awhile back but the game scared me too much. Nippon Ichi has become the masters of tactical madness. 'Rhapsody' was a simple tactical RPG. But then they started getting insane with gameplay when they switched the gameplay away from the grid system to a "normal" PRG view. Then 'Disgaea' came along. Need I say more. That the madness just keeps coming. Levels reaching BS proportions. Of course the PSP version is still available. I think.

I definitely want to pick up Space Invaders Extreme.

I had the DS Arkanoid, with paddle controller for a while, but I ended up selling it back to Tsutaya after a couple months. It's just not the same as the game I remember.

None of the floaty things that pop in to get in the way of your shots.

The playfield is often much taller than it is wide, which was annoying (to me).

The soundtrack got on my nerves quite early, although you can re-assign songs to different levels if you want.

The missions at the end of the big branching pathways are to rescue various cutsey anime-type characters...think, "Hello Kitty" cute.

All in all, it wasn't for me. The paddle controller (not a trackball controller) was an interesting gimmick, though.

I hate the fact that Star Ocean 4 is coming to the Xbox 360, perhaps exclusively, or at least before it is released on PS3. I guess Square Enix just thinks that the average person has a PS3 (to play FFXIII), an Xbox 360 (to play Star Ocean 4) and a Wii (to play the new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles coming out soon(ish)), oh yah and a PSP (for Crisis Core) and a DS (for all the new incarnations of Final Fantasy like the new FFIV coming out in '3D', etc etc). It's driving me a bit insane, because I vowed NOT to buy an Xbox and unless Star Ocean is released for the PS3, I'll probably end up having to buy the stupid thing just to play the game. *sigh* do they think we're made of money?

I'm really hoping that Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean 4 make the trip to the PS3, but its looking more and more like I'll be needing to get an Xbox 360 at some point for my JRPG needs.

I never played the original version of Rhapsody and the DS version looks like it could be fun, so I'll be getting that.

I still haven't actually finished Disgaea 1 and I haven't even started Disgaea 2, but I'll be getting Disgaea 3.

A Tales and Star Ocean game coming to 360 is not very surprising since Mircosoft has always been trying to push it's way in the Japanese market. I won't surprised if Mircosoft "greased the wheel" to get them on the 360 first.

Sam and Max belong to Telltale games who no longer belong to Lucasarts.

Wow, looks like my DS will be getting a workout with at least two of the new NIS titles.

I have a hard time believe Star Ocean IV won't be coming to both 360 and PS3. It was originally announced as exclusive to PS3, and a trailer for it was included on the Star Ocean I remake for PSP. Not until this Microsoft event yesterday did we ever hear anything about Star Ocean IV coming out for 360.

And The Last Remnant is coming out for both 360 and PS3. It's just going to be released for Xbox 360 before it's released for PS3. ...Funny how it's not even coming out until winter 2008, though (and only for 360 at that time), when it was originally supposed to come out in both Japan and North America for both platforms spring 2008. Laughing So much for their claim that the Unreal Engine 3 was making development so much faster. Cool

Ughh,Chaos Wars has another dub by privileged people that I swear have never played a game or seen an anime title in their life. It's like they read and recorded the entire script over a caramel latte at starbucks. Then again, every english dub sounds like that to me,to where the life of the original has been sucked out completely. You would have to be super tone deaf to make it all the way through this dub.

I love Nippon Ichi, they still keep 2D gaming alive.I'm running through Rhapsody 2 atm so this was a cool moment for me to hear other fans on the board mention their love (or even encounter)for Rhapsody. The one thing I'll have to say about it is the singing is damn embarrassing to get through.

Sega's SG-1000 did have some decent games,Golgo 13 was not one of them.Keep up the old school reviews man.

I was indeed correct, Secret Agent Clank will be released next week on PSP. That'll soften the blow, since I dare say, the DS may be getting the most releases this week(I own a DS, but only play Ninja Gaiden, and an occasional shot a Mario Bros. DS), but the PSP will have the best release of this upcoming week.

And yes, Crisis Core's VA is well done, and I commend Square Enix's Localization crew for the cutscenes using some program to make the lip flaps work properly for the English script.

Wow, that's a lot of Nintendo goodness there, I'll probably end up buying most of them, well except Arkanoid DS (I'll stick with Nervous Brickdown thank you very much) and the Naruto and Tamagotchi game. By the way, I'm still a bit confused about all those Disgaea games, so what are the big differences between the DS, PSP and PlayStation 2 versions?

And that Golgo 13 game? Talk about some awesome old school/obscure stuff and pretty good knowledge of the material too, you definitively got a winner in your hand with the Extra Lives segment!

Playstation 2 was the original version. So mostly just the basics. The only thing it has the the others don't is a song by "Tsunami Bomb" that the others apparently weren't able to obtain the license for.

The PSP version is an upgraded version, so it has:

• Etna mode. A new story featuring Etna. A few new maps, much stronger enemies, and some back story on Etna.
• More extra bosses. Including some familiar faces. spoiler[Adell, Rozalin, and Zetta.]
• Purchaseable music that you can play in item world (and believe me, this helps a lot because if you plan on making uber items the same music that plays in the PS version gets very, very annoying).
• Multiplayer mode where you can battle and trade items with friends.
• The game keeps track of a whole bunch of statistics you can view. Including all the items you've collected, extra bosses defeated, number of allies defeated (useful in getting certain endings), etc.

There's also two glitches in the game that weren't in the original. The game freezes after you get a certain number of counters (I think it's like over 9 IIRC). You mostly don't have to worry about this, but it's very annoying when you're playing against Baal or an item god (the most likely places this is to happen). The other glitch is where two items come with a whole bunch of subdued specialists. I do hope they fix these in the DS version (Well, more the former, I don't mind if they leave the latter lol).

I haven't played the DS version because it's not out in the US yet, but apparently it has all the features the PSP version has plus:

• Demon gadgets. Items that appear on the field. Not too familiar with them.
• Geo Cubes. I think they are similar to geo symbols. Again, not too familiar with them.
• More playable unique characters. spoiler[Adell, Rozalin, Zetta, and Plenair.]
• New opening movie.
• Stylus gameplay.

That pretty much covers it.

Did anyone listen to the voice of Youichi in that Chaos Wars clip? Holy fudging christ it was awful. I listened to him saying "Oops. I have to go now. My boss will be angry." about 100 times because it was such shoddy voice acting that it made me laugh until I cried. Everyone should listen to that clip that hasn't done so already. It might be slow to listen to but it's hilarious.

Just wondering, is Chaos Wars any good at all? If the gameplay is good to an inverse degree of the voice acting then it is a definite contender for best game ever made.

Well, you CAN just switch over to the Japanese audio for the story scenes... Though thankfully Grave should be spared since he never talks...

In all honesty though, I think O~3 never even wanted an English dub for the game; I bet it wasn't even in their budget for the game... But SCEA probably told them to put one in so that they would approve of it being released; O~3 then decided to do the cheapest dub they could do so that they don't spend more than they had to. The fact that there is NO ENGLISH DUB for the battles themselves also kind of helps my theory prove true.

Anyway... Yes, the game is good. It's a fully playable and fun Strategy RPG; in all honesty I find it to be one of the best SRPGs I've played. The battle system is just so nicely done and all the different characters being it also help make the game enjoyable.

Yeah, it was announced back in 1996 or so. IGN has a page on it, but I've never seen any images from the game itself.

Yep. It falls outside of the column's anime/anime-ish/made-in-Japan domain, though, so I didn't put it in the release list.
