"According to police, the day before he injured them, the child was insulted by 6 classmates including boys whom he tried to kill. They reportedly likened him to a Pokemon character."
Sounds like BS to me. What does this have to do with Pokemon? It's just a case of his classmatates bullying him.
I really hope this won't became the "Evangelion Murders #2" thread.

Oddly doesn't say just what specific Poké-mon character it was that provoked such an out burst. I blame it on the hormone storms of spring. A very irrational time. Wink

Probably called him a Jinx or a Clafaire, your right that its a shame which pokemon he was called wasn't mentioned...But in defense of the child, I'd be angry to had someone called me a Jigglypuff and would show them no mercy...given I was 13 with no common sense.

Still you don't hear about many sword related murder attempts since the late 1400's

Jigglypuffs are cute!

It is somewhat sad that bullying causes children to retalliate in such drastic measures. It's bad that the kids teased him, but the problem stems deeper than just anger over casual teasing if he saw killing the kids as the only answer.

Can any of you say "mentally disturbed"?

Ramblin' Wreck, I'm inclined to agree with you more. I don't think it matters which character the kid was likened with. This kid tried to kill other kids, and others on this board emphasize such a trivial detail? I'm more concerned with the other circumstances here. Where are the parents in this situation? What have they had to say? Why didn't they notice something wrong in the beginning? You have to know that this is coming from something deeper, so when did it all really begin?

This is only a tidbit as far as the story is concerned, but I just feel like something is missing.

... just how did the boy 'borrow' his grandfather's sword without anyone noticing and better yet, how'd he get to school with it? Shouldn't someone have noticed and said "No Jimmy, you can't bring the sword with you to school."?

I had wondered about the sword too, but the sword may have been short enough to conceal into a duffelbag, or the like. Especially if it was just a wakazashi.

That's not the point. The fact that he tried to kill his classmates in the first place is decidedly more alarming than his choice of weapon. Besides, who knows... he probably would have brought a rocket launcher to school if he had access to one.

Heh, wouldn't it have been cool if he were likened to Mewtwo? That way, he wouldn't have jumped the other younguns.

I thought about saying something along those lines myself when Gatsu said that. But he used "still" as a qualifier. It's not that he fails to recognize the seriousness of the situation. It's just a matter that it's fortunate that the situation wasn't made worse by the presence of a firearm. It could have been Columbine all over again instead.
