September 16: Shakugan no Shana boxset

Woohoo! I didn't even know this was coming out. I rented and enjoyed the series, but it didn't look like anyone had new copies of the DVDs for sale anymore.

Fate/Stay Night is better than one would think, especially for the based-on-video=game crowd. I'm happily surprised to see it and Shakugan no Shana (you must watch it) in the group. They were completed and released before Geneon went under, but wer eoff the primary market soon after.

Too stoked about Saiunkoku. {happy dance}

As for Ninja Vixens, my prediction? Already produced it may be, but don't be surprised if it gets a Shin-Chan/Ghost Stories type of treatment. Something about those TX studios that like MST3K'ing (sometimes bad) Japanese shows.

Fate/Stay night is a pretty decent adaptation, on what little I've played of the game. It's not as indepth as the game, but still amusing. My big complaint was the handling of one character at the end.
Unless you somehow missed it,the Fate/Stay night game is eroge. The anime adaptation is missing all the lewd situations.

For a story about love and teenage rebellion, Paradise Kiss is one of the best series of its kind ever created, and you want that special gift to give a lucky lady in your life, this is it.

From the description given it sounds like this show takes one steps forward and two steps back. I like romance but I fear the fashion and teenage rebellion themes would spoil it for me.

I was under the impression that Funimation would release singles for uncompleted sets. I own the first few Karin, Hellsing Ultimate and When They Cry volumes. Am I mistaken or is Funimation just releasing multiple single volumes on the same day?

At $70 the Shana box set is much cheaper than most of Geneon's complete collections which usually would debut between $100-$200.

I'm really looking forward to a bunch of these re-releases, namely Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Rozen Maiden. I got so desprate to own all of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni that I bought a $10 dollar bootleg with episodes 13-26 all crammed on one disk (I'm SO glad I can finally get rid of that stupid thing).

Funi is going to be getting almost all my money this fall, though.
I really hope they release Higurashi in single volumes, because I REALLY don't want to re-buy volumes 1-3.

I agree with Bamboo on most of her points.

I haven't seen Saiunkoku as I try and avoid most shoujo, but I hear from a lot of males that it's very good. I'll check it out once it's available via boxsets.

Higurashi is one of my favorite shows. The presentation of the show is off at times (perhaps because of what was left out of the plot? I don't know...), but it's very engaging. I beamed when I saw that FUNi picked this up! Now maybe those prices for vol. 2 will drop from $100+.

Black Lagoon is a lot of fun, but it's too much like a blockbuster movie. It's a definite crowd pleaser, but it wears thin. Both Rock and Revy annoyed me by the end.

Paradise Kiss... Hmm. I don't like the mangaka's work, nor am I a fan of shoujo, so I avoided this.

Personally, I was happy to see Zero no Tsukaima rescued. It's painfully trite and forgettable, but still enjoyable. Shana's resurrection made me smile as well. I had gotten into the series recently and now I'll get to buy it proper-like.

Um, I said I'd played some of the game. I'm well aware of it's pedigree.

What i meant was that the prologue of the game explained the whole servant and war things a million times better than the anime. Though given the format, it's to be expected, and isn't a mark against the anime.

Or are you saying it's not a decent adaption because they cut the sex? Wink

Oh boy, September is going to be a good month. Parakiss boxset, and more Higurashi? Oh yeah! Maybe I'll celebrate even more and pick up the art box for Higurashi, since I never got it the first time around. I'll have to pick up Saiunkoko too, since I've been hearing such good things about it.

Saiunkoku, love it, love it, looooove it! Especially the main character, who's name escapes me, but who's lovliness lingers on and on. Tall, golden haired, angst filled, hey what more can you ask for! But don't let this gushing fool you, there is a story here and a very compelling one if you give it a chance.
Now Higurashi, I admit I wasn't impressed at first, but one of my students insisted and insisted an insisted. I was sucked in by the multiple points of view and the carnage.
I can use them both in class so I am happy that they were saved.

This was a great theme for Shelf Life. And I have to agree, why would Funimation actually take Ninja Vixens? Unless they had no choice and it was non-negotiable, I can't really see the point.

That really puts my mid at rest and it seems Funimation is really doing a great service for all of us who were collecting the originals. I'm really glad that the "cut off" points coincide with Geneon. I will agree and say that out of all the canceled titles Saiunkoku is probably the one that I was the most disappointed was canceled followed by When They Cry. I'm really glad that they are releasing the new volumes right away since it would be annoying to wait through 9 volumes of Ueki before they catch up to where Geneon left off.

I find it a bit odd that they are releasing the individual volumes for Gelade since I believe all the volumes are out. I really like the metal pencil boards that were included in the original releases.

Then there's Paradise Kiss, a series that I fell in love with within minutes. From its snazzy use of Franz Ferdinand, to its stylish artwork, to the rose-scented art card inside that makes your anime shelf smell like a JC Penny restroom, I love everything about this series.
You know, I'd been thinking that the JC Penny restrooms smelled like my anime shelves, and I guess this explains why.

Re: Zero no Tsukaima -- since Shelf Life is a DVD review column, I doubt Bamboo would go in and review it via fansubs before it's actually released on DVD.

Hmm, now I don't know what to do with my half-filled F/SN box. It's cheaper to just by that boxset than to track down the last 2 volumes I need.
