I liked this movie! Great action that many anime movies have been missing over the past few years. If you're in any area showing it, check it out. Here's a review of it (with a few spoilers):: http://www.therossman.com/rrr/anime/sword_of_stranger.html

This was an absolutely beautifully-animated movie. Not the most original of plot lines, but who cares about that when you get to see gorgeously-choreographed sword fights? Very Happy

Guess I have to wait for the wider opening later this year. L.A. is too far to go.

Shoot, I hope this plays for longer than a week at LA! I'll be in the area for Comic-con and would love to see this! The ImaginAsian center is a great theater. *fingers crossed*

Indeed. The fights weren't just "clang clang clang" but had a beginning, middle and an end.

Good stuff.

Well, I do.
I don't care about action if the characters are bland (like almost all characters from new Bones-shows). That movie was horribly boring.

(and to clear that up: I actually like action a lot - but only with interesting characters involved)

i honestly thought the movie was kind of boring for the most part, but i loved the final battle. the last 10 minutes may be the best anime sword fight i've ever seen.

When are they going to solicit this? It's not like it's going to play in Chicago.

They should do what Viz Media is doing. Viz Media got Bleach and Naruto to the masses. Bandai is doing to arthouse rounds which won't reach as many people.

Missed out on AX because I was too busy with something else, but from what I heard, it is a great movie. Will be checking that out next week,

I imagine(and hope) Bandai's just using its release to guarantee Tokikake making the Best Animated Film eligibility list.

Tokikake is one year past its Oscar eligibility.

Or do you mean Sword of the Stranger?

enurtsol: It's only ineligible, if it's been released on dvd or broadcast on television.

That's another rule too, but, unless the rules have changed since the days of Spirited Away when I last researched this, there's a time limit as well. To be eligible for next year's (2009) Oscars, the film must had been released in its native country no earlier than Jan 1 two years prior (2007) and screened for at least a week in NYC or LA the year before (Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2008).

Tokikake had been released in Japan in 2006, making it past its eligibility. Obviously, the time limit is there to keep the contest among new/recent films --it is an annual contest after all-- (unless it's a lifetime achievement award or something) and so countries could not keep submitting the same film year after year.

That's for foreign language pictures, not animated films.
