Wow, you guys are kinda bent out of shape about this.

You didn't expect some piece of garbage like this coming soon? It was only a matter of time before some dip**** at SOME news channel/site decided to be a 'revolutionary' journalist and write about how anime is morally corrupting america.

That being said, I easily predicted this, but the most pathetic accusation in the article is calling TTGL sexually explicit or anything of the like. Yes, there's fanservice, but have you seen some of the other shows out there? Oh, and how about the fact that ya know, the fanservice isn't even the FOCUS of the show?

He's looking to get some controversial attention and as long as we ignore it, it's not going to go anywhere. It's some two bit journalist posting on MSNBC, it's not like it is an actual headline that got shown and is playing every hour on the network itself.

Be ticked off all you want but for all you know, this is what he wants. To paint us as frustrated and easily angered anti-social people because of some stereotype. Granted, most of the posts here are civil, I think we're better off NOT saying that we're offended, and just PURELY point out the inaccuracies and leave it at that.

Yet people forget how bad the porn industry is in California, or what goes on in Las Vegas. Fact of the matter is the guy who wrote this article probably got Cs on his way to getting his Ph.D or whatever mock credentials he has to be even talking about this stuff. It's ridiculous.

feel free to send them some kind emails.

The reporter and/or MSNBC is not who needs to be sent e-mails. If you want to have some real impact, try something like this:

1 - Make a list of those corporations that sponsor the broadcast of Gurren Lagann on the SciFi Channel. Also list any other companies involved in the marketing or distribution of the Gurren Lagann DVDs and other associated products.

2 - Determine if any company on that list also happens to be an advertiser on MSNBC or, even better, happens to be a sponsor of MSNBC News.

3 - Write a politely-worded letter to the President/CEO and the Director of Marketing for those companies. Enclose a copy of the MSNBC article, and express your concern that the report unfairly tarnishes a television series whose broadcast their company is sponsoring and which you happen to enjoy. Be sure to mention that you greatly appreciate the fact that they are sponsoring the show, and that this makes you more favorably disposed toward their product(s).

4 - Sit back and wait for the fun to begin.

This article is very repulsive, it has zero ground to stand on, and is downright insulting. And using poke doujin and hello kitty toys as what they think is a valid point is laughable. Their comprehension of loli is weak at best and referring to Gurren Lagann as “sexually-suggestive and explicit” what a joke. This is an article written on zero actual facts and meagre understandings of anything covered within.

I love the mainstream media, they have such a good record of getting their facts straight. That's the real "moral-free zone".

If all anime is porn and all otaku use a Hello Kitty vibrator while they thumb through Pokemon porn, why don't conventions break out into orgies? It's such a black & white view on anime: if it's not for kids then it's pornographic. Then what would Death Note be? (used as an example because of it's current popularity)

I thought the fantasy/real life part to be... interesting but uninformed. While there are people who occasionally prefer fantasy to reality, some more so than others, it reminds me a little of a mocumentary in Futurama about people having relationships with robots and how it will destroy all of mankind. This part of the article seems like it trying to scare the soccer moms into thinking that anime will cause their children to lose interest in having relations with real people in favor of meaningless relations with a cartoon character.

This article doesn't surprise me since they seem to appear more often these days and I don't worry about people seeing me as a pervert because I'm buying anime. Pretty much anybody close to me knows I like anime, and as far as I can tell they don't think I'm a perv.

I did get a chuckle out of the anon that spamed the Bel-air theme in the article's feedback page. Shame on you MSNBC, I expected that kind of junk from Fox News. You just joined the S*** list.

But sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann" and "Legend of the Overfiend"

I think they mean that Gurren Lagann is suggestive and is Overfiend is explicit, respectively. GL is kind of suggestive, yeah, but it's so not the first thing to come to mind when I think 'suggestive anime'.

And naughty anime is hardly mainstream.

Well, glad someone said it. Gurren Lagen has a girl running around in a bikini and hotpants. Plus, DRILLS. It is very sexually suggestive. Yet it's not sexually explicit like Overfiend. The sentence could have been worded much better though.

Despite somewhat getting sexualization in anime and manga fandom right, I think too many poorly worded sentences and bad fact checking, never mind misquotes, renders the article poor.

I do wish someone would write a better one on this subject though. There could be a good article on the subject.

Ya know what I find so funny about all the reactions about this?
If the Japanese otaku are asked about this, I think their response would be something like: ... AND PROUD OF IT! Laughing

It's just funny that Westerners can be so defensive, while the Japanese probably don't even see a need for defending. Razz

Brian Alexander is more than a little late to the party.20 years too late.Just sit back and read what he has to say.He obviously didn't do enough research. Why would he mention Urosukidoji* or Gurren Laggan? They are two completely different subjects. What keywords was he searching or told to search? Laughing I find this hilarious. The people he asked didn't know either. This is a shallow and inaccurate report. This report could only be taken seriously by overprotective parents who love to blame everything on everyone else.More fuel for the ill knowledged fire.

MSNBC:Don't let noobs write reports on shit they haven't a clue about.Their reputation just went down 200 points. Laughing

*Do you know why he said Legend of the Overfiend?Cause most Americans can not pronounce Urosukidoji or even something simple like Onimusha.

not sure what part of that article you find offensive or worth getting upset over...?

Yea actually i agree, in some cases. i enjoy anime a lot but when you compare the american's culture "ratings & restrictions" to the japanese they let a lot more pass, however in terms of extent america is worst. READ BELOW @ UNDERSTAND ME

Japan-porn-blurred
America porn-fullview Very Happy
Japan pg- panty view/groping
America pg- no panty no groping Crying or Very sad
america pg-naked baby butts sometimes fronts
japan pg-naked baby butts
both america and japan have innocent family showering more in japan tho
japan is alot more obsessed with little girls and rape is a common interest.

in short when i see it in japan's art, i see innocent culture and alot of naughtiness and the same exact thing in america.

anime is a lot more sexy than the cartoon but its not for kids to see that its up 2 parents to pay attention to what kind of anime they watch because their is a lot of innocent anime 2. So realy the only way sex can be a problem is if youngsters watch it.

Oh yea 1 more thing
Japan more control over what kids watch
America is "here son watch a porno now and ill complain later" and/or "it someone else's fault".

Ha! It isn't a coincidence that in anime, youths get away to do a lot more without any parent involvement. The absentee salaryman father isn't just a stereotype, y'know. Laughing
(IIRC, there's no V-chip, nor any age ratings system actually, in Japan.)

Movie ratings are a little different too.PG-12 can have Blood, guts and nudity in it.A far cry from our PG-13 fluff.

I find it very interesting that in a thread responding to an albeit inaccurate portrayal of anime fandom, most people are adopting a denialist position rather than trying to face the issues head-on. You all sound so like the members of a certain lolicon forum, who always erupt in a chorus of indignation the moment anyone dares to accuse them of pedophilia.
