I've never heard of this anime until today (total anime n00b, I know) and I just got a kick out of this "review". The anecdotal stuff about CPM was great.
The thing is, the way the review discribes the show, and the comments I'm seeing in this thread... I kinda want to check it out now. I agree, there is definitly a charm to 80s Machoism anime that seems lost today. I'm only just discovering Fist of the North Star, and for all its faults it was still entertaining. Sometimes 80s has to be excused for its overt camp for its few good points. |

My friends and I have been fans well over ten years each (I'm on my fifteenth), and we have that one guy in our group who LOVES MD Geist.
He even has a rare phone card given out an at an anime con in '95 that he went to. Never used, still mint. He loves this show. We all try and figure out why, but, hey, everyone has their guilty pleasure where they're free to freak out without explaination. For me it's Fist of the North Star. Which, I can honestly say, is showing its age at this point (the original, anyways, not the new OVA/Movie stuff). I still think it's much better than MD Geist. I also watched it Monday, after Gurren Lagann. It reminded me of why I hadn't watched it in forever. |

In the US MD Geist, Genocyber, and Cybernetics Guardian were released in one collection called the "Mecha Masters" box set in the US. It's in the article. Geist and Genocyber are good (for Genocyber please watch episodes 1-3, 4 and 5 are skipable). Remember Genocyber was mentioned as a Buried Treasure a while back. |

I admit, there are times when he just seems too tough, like he'll always win everything that comes his way.
But what separated him from other heroes of his caliber was, instead of some stoic hero, he's a complete asshole the whole time. And that was interesting. Many others heroes were a bunch of self-righteous pricks that kissed puppies and only ate vegetables; this Geist would probably eat puppies, or probably have if they were around then. It just felt different. Of course, I still enjoy characters like Kain from Blood Omen. Otherwise, the Geist story was still thinner than the paper it was written on, but I've gotten to expect that with any shows from the eighties. |

At the same time that Justin was involved in compiling the uber-shiny new heavily special edition DVD of M.D. Geist I was tasked with compiling the uber-shiny full-color special edition comic.
We spent a quite few nights at Ye Olde Tripple Inn back then. |

Justin, there is another blatant movie reference in M.D. Geist that you forgot to mention. Read your review and find out what it is.
Is AirCooledMan_2006 John O' Donnel?
For the record, I used to love Vampire Wars but now I hate that OVA with a passion. It didn't help matters that the title character had the lamest code name ever: spoiler[BAT??? ] but spoiler[Vampires as space aliens?] That's just pathetic! |

You were probably joking but, I know he's not J.O.D. J.O.D. is in your face, and honest. He wouldn't hide behind a screen name. He definitely had a passion for what he was doing. I hope he jumps back into the industry because he always made things more interesting. -Frank Pannone Managing Editor Media Blasters/Kitty Media |

Watched MD Geist few months a go when I was on an older anime binge. Out of the Mecha Masters set this was hands down the worst. I'll agree that Genocyber pretty good for the first three eps, but I'll have to disagree with some opinions about Cybernetics Guardian. Mediocre at best but did a better job overall than M.D. Geist. The story is next to non-existent, especially in Death Force were the production staff, especially the writers, forgot about the concepts of continuity and development and just jumped around in the narrative. The main character wasn't better. Geist was just a self-centered ass with a blood lust, and come off more of a villain than an anti-hero. Heck even though he had a god-complex, at least Krauser wanted to help people.
Couple questions for Justin. Considering he really doesn't fit the definition, why was Geist referred to as "company Spokes-Mecha" in the credits of CPM releases? The other is any chance of including Garaga and Baoh in future Buried Garbage columns? |

I'm one that loves Demon Soldier M. D. Geist it has a overt use of Ultraviolence that showcase a world devastated by war, where law and order no longer exists, the law of the strong rules... current wimpy anime leads wouldn't last 5 seconds in this world as they would be gushing buckets of arterial blood at the mere precesence of Geist. bleeding hearts and wimps need not apply!
Death Force is not so good, although it has some enjoyable parts. but I just hate this hunt to extintion of M. D. Geist fans, seems nobody can grasp the concept of the Anti-Hero And Baoh is not garbage! |

It's weird... I've written two different articles about M.D. Geist in the U.S. with a bit of different opinion but can never get as good as Justin's take. Hats off to you again man. Though I'm still wanting to see that Shatner vid. :p
Baoh wasn't garbage IMHO, but that's for another topic. |

Me too! I'm currently watching this series on fansubs, considering Manga Entertainment's treatment of it (and subsequent license expiration). It's dated and has lots of stock footage, but it's good and corny fun! I'm planning on eventually getting Image's release of the movie. I really wish animeigo would rescue it... By the way, Justin, do you think you could do an article on Fist of The North Star in the next edition of Buried Treasure? I think it's one of the most underrated Shonen jump properties in America and deserves a proper tribute (or being poked at, if you are so inclined ). |

I finally got the chance to see the legendary badness that was MD Geist on Ani-Monday, though I have to say that it was more "awesomely" bad than hideously or offensively awful. The animation looked decently crisp and simple sometimes and erratic most others, the characters were cardboard jokes, the plot was ridiculous and muddled, the violence was insanely and implausibly over-the-top, and the acting was far too hammy--yet, all of that put together made something that was just too insipid to totally hate.
The acting wasn't lazily done and was more lively than some of the other dubs from that era (Vaiya's VA being so into a such a role and overdoing it in the process, it was hard not to find it more amusing and gratifying than grating; and Geist didn't sound too bad, either). The score seemed like an odd choice given its compositions, but it was surprisingly good and only added to the dysfunctional mystique that was the OVA, as did the laughably energetic and passionate theme songs (by Hironobu Kageyama, no less!). The show itself was utterly ridiculous and lacking in any sort of formal plot, strung together by a train of logic-busting fight scenes solely meant to solidify Geist as a man ahead of his time--the Kira Yamato before Kira Yamato. And of course, he's just too cool to bed the sole hot, naked chick, since he's too cool and brooding for that stuff. It was basically just a vehicle for a guy that's supposed to be badder beyond words (or a coherent script), but there seemed to be such an effort behind trying to making it remotely interesting or even slightly watchable, that it was too hard to flat-out hate it. Still a crap title and not worth much of a second viewing, but it wasn't a waste of time either and it was too "great" of a bad show in its own right. Also, a really great article and insight on the domestic production of it. |
