So, if you want to push it a little, one could say that without Ashita no Joe, Weekly Shonen Jump wouldn't be where it is today. |
Yeah. Too bad most people aren't aware of this...

As you mentioned in your article, it set that standard for which a lot of shounen shows drew inspiration from. Furthermore, it was one of the earlier animation shows that did not fear showing physical violence and in the early 70s to boot. The stylistic choice of using dark pencil/charcoal shading gives it a gritty feel that gives the show a certain mood and character. People used to more modern anime fare will find the show ugly, clichéd (I question this as it was the first in many of the anime tropes that have come out as anime shows post-AnJ drew from it) and very slow going, especially the TV series. Strip away the prejudices and just watch it as is. |
My hat is off to you, sir. Rarely do I see a comment that so perfectly captures how I feel about certain things. This is one of them. It's a real shame that people can't appreciate the things that came before their supposed times. Age has absolutely nothing to do with quality and something as enduring as Ashita no Joe should be treated with the utmost respect for what it did and what it has brought about. The animation style may not be to certain folks' liking but, like Leongsh said...put away the prejudice and just watch the show as it is. And in all honesty, the animation is pretty damn well done for a show produced in 1970. With the limits of budget and technology, they did a pretty good job. Looking at anything on TV in America at the time, Ashita no Joe clearly comes out the winner. We're talking full animation, not cookie-cutter recycled footage every single episode. So, in short, it's a classic and deserves to be treated as such.

Wow okay guys I am not a HUGE anime fan BUT watching Ashita No Joe has made me one! I've always dabbled in the world of anime but never was drawn in.... now since it was Joe that drew me in I've watched all of the Macross anime, and I'm now about 20 episodes into the 'Hokuto no Ken' (I am loving the Mad Maxiness of it all).
Here's where this gets tragic for me... where are you guys watching all of the episodes of Joe??? I got to see up to episode 35 with decent subs but all of a sudden the subbing changed and they weren't even using the proper character names. It became so poorly subbed that it literally made no sense. I am DYING to see the rest of this ground breaking series... where are you guys viewing it with proper English subs?
When I had to stop watching because of the crappy subs I yelled out much like Dampei....
"JOooooooooooooooooooooooooeee!!!!"
=)
Any help to a budding anime fan?
