What a sad sad story. The VHS arts made it look so happy, but which one to get back then... haha!

Didn't know t'was well-known enough for its theme song to be included in the Best of Anime CD awhile ago....

It's on the torrents sites so in a few minutes you should be able to find a torrent of Windaria. Not like I want to encourage torrent downloads, but in order to see it uncut it's the only way.

This might make up for me after watching Crystal Triangle. We'll see about that, I just want good storytelling.

I've seen both Once Upon a Time (rented from Blockbuster, which surprisingly, has it instock at a lot of locations), and I dled Windaria some other time. Yeah, the dub was awful, but Windaria was kind of interesting, but way way more depressing. The narration destroyed the story.

Is the ADV version exactly the same as the Harmony Gold version?

Unfourtunately that is the only version I have seen. But I do remember some pretty heavy violence and a certain scene in a castle that raised both my eyebrows. I got it for cheap though so it was still worth it. For me some of the more fantastical imagery and animation was enough of a draw.

This is a blirb that I wrote in my comments after I watched it way back when:
"Good production quality for time period. And fairly tragic. But either to much stuff was skipped over or was poorly executed to produce the proper dramatic effect."

I have the VHS tape and actually enjoy it. It may not be perfect, but it isn't unwatchable.

Whenever I hear the Foo Fighters song Long Road to Ruin I think of Windaria, the parallels between the anime and that song are almost haunting. Would make one heck of an AMV.

I have a copy of this on vhs, the streamline dub version. This was a sad story. But worth watching.

I need to make time to sit down and watch it again.

Yes, it is. Surely you remember the narration? Ruining the terrible emotional desolation of a certain scene? Laughably trying to pretend the ending was anything other than a total tragedy? Bizarrely adding a plotline about poisoned water that goes nowhere?

Given that you seemed to like it to a degree anyway, you really need to watch the original version.

So are you saying it's not stupid at all? People all across the Internet habitually misuse the word "ironic" because their understanding of the word probably stems from some song that didn't get the concept either. The word that should have been used to describe the situation of "wow, I just watched this and now it's being written about on the site!" is "coincidental." "Well-timed" or "appropriate," perhaps. But in no way is it "ironic."

On the subject of things that actually matter: Windaria is one of those titles that people in America watched decades ago that really helped illustrate in their minds that anime was something different than what they were used to. Sure, there was violence and nudity, but the reason everyone remembers Windaria is precisely because of what Justin said: it's such a downer! It's worth reiterating that even though this officially came out in America in the early 90s, many fans discovered this in the late 1980s. As tangentially illustrated by this old fanzine article from 1987 that Dave Merrill managed to preserve, animation of this sort was a far cry from the Smurfs.

Which is why the hatchet job committed upon Windaria is legendary. People would often invoke its example back in the days when "dubs vs subs" was the number one argument in the fandom, even if they'd never even seen the thing. All anyone needed to know about Windaria was that Carl Macek and Streamline Pictures cut it to ribbons for the sake of making a buck. While true, its status among anime fans has for many years been that of an argumentative tool for making a point. Now that the dub/sub war has taken a backseat to the "fansubbing vs the US anime industry" war, perhaps now some people will make the effort to actually watch Windaria. That is, if they're so inclined to watch cartoons from over twenty years ago.

In terms of depression, is Mononoke or Windaria worse? I've seen Mononoke and that depressed me so much that I haven't brought myself to watch it since my first viewing. I have yet to see Windaria, and I'm wondering if it'll be as bad or worse.

Now see this is a title they should bring back.

I remember this title years ago through friends that traded (raw) tapes. But never sat and actually watched it. I was too much one to avoid such anime titles with slow plots. But friends I knew said it was good but SAD. If I had another chance I'd give it a look. Hell, I'd even buy it just to add it to my collection of "oldschool" titles.

'Inomata-san' did the girls from 'Brain Powered? I'm surprised that I never picked up on that sooner. But she's most notable for the 'Tales of' series after 'Fujishima'. She has a really nice style. Also, let's not forget 'LEDA - The Adventures of Yoko' as well. That's another oldie. You'll have to cover that one next time.

Good review.
