Somehow, it seems that it was cancelled altogether because the price went too high. Doesn't really make much sense.

Zeiram, don't you consider +180,000 USD $ a lot of money?? Well I do! Probably, the supporters of this weren't expecting so many people with so much money.

Could've been a Millionare Manga reader.
Then again, perhaps Verification was the problem.

Well yeah, my best thought was that it was forged. Like some signed baseball or eminem's house being put up on ebay and doubling in value unaturally.

Because it's impossible to tell between joke bids and real ones?
Thus it'd be difficult (if not impossible) to eliminate them from the bidding while still allowing the sale to be "fair" and expediant.

Looks like the bid was real. Anyway, I take back what I said about Shinji Mizushima exploiting his fans by making them pay to appear in his manga (that's obviously not the case at all).

Well, I'll never get tired of repeat that +180,000 US $ was really a high amount of money. The mangaka wasn't expecting that.

Yeah. I think he at least has a decent code of morals. I could never accept 180,000 usd (don't feel like converting), in exchange for illistrating someone in a single panel appearence. Now if it the person was to become a regular character, that may be somewhat different, but I'd still have to question it. It's not fair to the poor fans anyway.
