Miramax was going to cut 20 minutes, but Tarantino cut a deal with Harvey Weinstein. Harvey could use Quentin's name to promote the movie if he didn't cut the film.

Newsflash. It was already cut by 20 minutes. Tarantino still endorsed an edited film.

Just saw a GitS 2 add on TV during the daily show. Looked good.

I've already suggested the title to a Film Festival near me. Used the excuse that Anime showings would bring in more patrons and more money. Laughing

Here's hoping.

It wasn't cut, not by Miramax at least. What we saw was uncut from the Chinese theatrical release.

The "cuts" you're talking about are parts that were added to the director's cut video release. They were cut from the movie by the Chinese producers before it made it to theatres. If you consider that cut, then virtually every movie in existence is "cut."

tempest: Those cuts you're talking about were forced to happen by Harvey when he got the rights to Hero, because he didn't want it to be a 2 hour film. He always tries to trim down Asian films to 90 minutes.

Gatsu, you're wrong

And I'm one of the most anti-MiramAxe people you'll find

So those reports of Harvey demanding Yimou re-shoot and edit Hero are wrong?

Whether or not he made those demands is irrelevant. The film released in theaters is not edited. I am positive that like John Lassetter before him, we have Quentin Tarantino to thank for that.

Actually, it is edited, since the subs have been Americanized, and they removed the Faye Wong song. And John Lasseter did not endorse a 90 minute version of Spirited Away, but supported the full 2 hour version.

Extended version isn't the director's cut.

Even then, "Extended" clearly indicates that it is not the original theatrical screening. If it was, wouldn't you be obligated to be just as angry that you weren't seeing the original?

And what was wrong with Princess Mononoke? I've seen all three versions of the film (straight translation, Neil Gaiman's translation, and the English audio), and the two "Americanized" versions were excellent. Exact same feelings for Spirited Away.

I was gonna see Sky Captain tomorrow, but it looks like that can wait.

Hero, ugh. I WISH they had cut 20 minutes out of that dreadful thing. ALL of the film's real story happens in the last 20 minutes of the movie. There's zero real character development. Blech.

I will see 'House of Flying Daggers' though. Oh, and Gatsu, your tinfoil hat is a little crooked, you may want to adjust it.
