I played all three movies at the same time, yet I could still understand that Sushi tv movie.
Central Park Media has licnesed some interesting shows, i.e. World of Narue, Slayers and Record Of Lodoss. But I haven't read any news from them several years now. |

I too prefer the old Manga Ent dub of Patlabor. Hopefully there won't be too much fiddling required to mux it along with the BD video.

Man the Sushi TV thing was beyond stupid. Geez I can't believe I watch that crap.
CPM brought over many good things. Many people already list the good stuff but if you glance at my DVD collection (which is mostly OVAs and movies) it's mostly CPM DVDs. My laserdisc collection tells the same story, mostly CPM stuff. |

Sushi TV hmmm... Yep, would've watched it, maybe even without shame
The hostess does look good though. To really sell the product they should've made her cosplay... as Armitage... every week... RE: MD Geist, I was actually pretty surprised how little editing was done to both I & II when they aired on Sci-Fi earlier this year |

A lot of the Manga UK actors were, and are, regulars on BBC Radio productions. Anime dubbing wasn't really their bread and butter. For instance, http://www.radiolistings.co.uk/candc/marinker_peter.html has a partial list of Peter Marinker's work. |

It didn't take that long to find the 37 minute video of all the Gaga trailers. The BGC one was just funny since the guy (to my ears) was saying Knight Saviors (which was wrong of course), and also they don't want to get paid to fight boomers.
Of course the MD Geist one was pure gold. "Animated by Japan's top animators." No wonder Gaga didn't do good at all, the trailers were terrible for any company to be interested. Then again about a year or two after AnimEigo and CPM got into the business they didn't use Gaga at all for anime distribution rights (If the history of AnimEigo tells us anything). Then again did CPM and AnimEigo ever get any titles from the US branch of Gaga? |

Had I seen that Sushi TV ad circa 1997, I probably would have been hooked. Remember that pretty much all American cartoons at that time were Ren and Stimpy knock-offs, with bizarre characters and gross humor. In fact, one of the things that drew me into anime in the first place was that it wasn't trying to gross me out at every turn.
I have seen a different version of "Sushi TV," on an obscure cable channel. The focus is on live-action TV and game shows instead of animation, but the concept is similar. Apparently Japanese game shows are the Next Big Thing as far as networks are concerned. |

I was unaware Gaga had a US office. I can't speak for AnimEigo, but Gaga WAS the licensor for those titles that ended up at CPM. In fact, the master 1" tape of Project A-ko still had "SuperNova" on the label. |

Well, some anime DID have a high gross-out factor. Remember North Star's 'splodey heads? But yeah, it's kinda funny that Justin reminded us of just how much of a shaft anime got in the early days when it was regarded as violent stuff that kids wouldn't be allowed to watch (when today, a lot of US-licensed anime is TV 14-ish). Again, this reminds me of those late-late-night commercials for send-away programs for VHSs of those ultra-"ADULTS ONLY INTENSE EXTREEEEEME ACTION" movies. Does anyone else feel that stuff like the original GITS movie and Vampire Hunter D don't feel as EXTREME today as they tried to pimp them out as? |

I was just wondering, for the sake of having some authority...Justin, what would be YOUR overall opinion of CPM/USM's sum total of anime? Mostly good, mostly crap, or in-between? |

I would compare their licensing in the early ears to the way a whale eats: it just sucked up EVERYTHING, no matter what it was, and then shat it out a few months later. There's a LOT of crap in there, but it's also by far the most interesting back catalog to rummage through looking for interesting things. It's no accident that I've probably written the most about CPM titles. Lots of amazing finds that would have otherwise been forgotten. Lots of hilariously awful trash. Compare that to the early back catalog of ADV, who licensed almost all mediocre ecchi fare, almost none of which is worth writing about... either as garbage or as treasure. (Luna Varga? Hanappe Bazooka? I don't think I could write more than a paragraph on either of those.) |
