Some people follow their favorite rock band across the country when they tour. Is this really any different?

The difference is that seeing the rock band isn't a total waste of time.

I consider both acts a little too much fanaticism perhaps, but again, that's besides the point and a matter of personal opinion.

Actually, what I meant was, with a band, each performance might be different. They'll say different things, the venue is different, they'll do different things....
With a movie, it's always going to be the same.

I will concede that you make a reasonable point.
To be fair though, the individual who did this was there to attain the complete collection of limited edition swag, so in essence there was a point to it. Even if some of us may consider the action a touch insane, as long as it's his money to burn (I'm assuming it's a "he").

The fan bought tickets and got the merchandise. But did they actually sit through each showing of the movie?

I`ve seen the K-ON movie twice now, the first time back in december and two days ago. I drove 40 miles to see the movie for the first time, that`s about 1400 yen for the toll road alone. Theatre ticket was 1800 yen. That`s around 4500 yen alone, gas and food included.
And it was worth it. The movie is fun, lively and well animated.

Here's the kicker: That swag is going to only increase in value.
This dude can easily sell it and make more than he spent.
Damn smart, if you ask me.

*whistles* 137 movie showings. That's dedication.
EDIT: Oh wait, does that mean he saw all 137 showings, or just 29? Either way is pretty impressive.
The most times I've ever seen a movie in theaters was 5 for the 2004 film of Phantom of the Opera. Yes, yes, the one with Gerard Butler as the rough voice, rocker version of the phantom with 'tis but a scratch on his face instead of the nightmare fuel it should have been. Haters to the left, I still love that movie.
I rarely ever go see movies in theaters anymore, and I haven't seen an anime one in years. If I had a bunch of friends to go with, I probably would - otherwise, it's normally limited to the times I'm visiting my folks. I can't remember if I saw Spirited Away on the big screen or not. I think I did. I saw the first Pokemon movie a long time ago, but otherwise I can't think of any anime I know for sure that I saw in theaters. I'm tempted to go see Arrietty, but I haven't yet made the commitment to do so.

pretty much this, k-on is a very hot title right now even if he didn't like the movie he could easily make 6x to 10x times the amount he spent on this stuff.

Well! Glad it's not only us that have people going into huge amounts of debt for illogical reasons
Plus, how can this person take so much time off to get to all this theaters? The power of Otaku? xD
