I can't believe no one mentioned Ghost In The Shell yet ! [EDIT: OK so they did, oops] Both movies, both series of stand alone complex, and the solid state society OVA all have killer soundtracks.

Blu Ray is the Laserdisc of today. Long before it reaches profitability a new (and superior) technology will arrive.

Almost certainly true. To make matters worse, the ridiculous level of encryption on BD ensures that once they stop making BD players and HDMI-compliant TVs, your BD collection will be coasters.

For 99% of anime, DVD is fine. I confess to being curious about seeing Advent Children in HD though.

I don't disagree, but from a consumer standpoint nothing was better quality than LaserDisc for a good 15 years or so. Just, few people wanted to spend the money on it. And no porn. That killed the format, arguably. (The irony of this is that Blu Ray has plenty of porn, but NOBODY wants to see it!)

Wait, what? I know when I was searching online for my LD deck, there would be people auctioning bundles of deck + discs and almost always there were some Playboy Calendar/Special types of video. Or, are we quantifying there was no real/good porn available on LD?

The current generation is pretty much the beginning and the end of this. A portion of the $30,000 licensing fees go to the Blu Ray Disc Association, another (larger) portion go to the AACS committee, which is a layer of copy protection that has already been broken but is nonetheless mandatory for the format.

On the tape formats you only had to pay a royalty if you wanted to use the official logo on the box. DVD had patents, but they were very low and were absorbed into replication fees (with an additional fee if you wanted MacroVision turned on, or some of the later invented copy protection techniques). Both HD-DVD and Blu Ray had this ridiculous new system, and it's arguably doing much more to damage the format than the consumer prices, since it's severely limiting the number of titles released.

Thank you much, that was all very informative.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me that a broken algorithm is still mandatory. Under the DMCA (5/8ths the founders of AACS are American), one merely has to prove copy-protection circumvention, not corporate enforcement of strong algorithms or hashes. There was something similar with DVD if I remember my early security policy classes...

Best anime OST ever is the Tsubasa Chronicle one. Kajiura Yuki is one of my favourite anime composers anyway, and the music from Tsubasa is haunting, beautiful and emotional all at the same time. Shame the anime it accompanies is mediocre at best. I'm a music student and I'd give anything to be able to compose like that. Nodame also gets a special mention because I know and love most of the pieces in it.

O: My dog just got his fifteen minutes. O:

Thanks for another great column.

Re: Will the anime industry collapse?
While there are a lot of repackage-ings and such, Funimation did just announce that they picked up ten new shows. I think they're trying to be more aggressive than ever right now.

Re: Answerfans
.hack//SIGN was the first series that really made me fall in love with its music. If you include the OP and ED, I think Eremental Gerad and Madlax edge it out. Of course, the common denominator here is Yuki Kajiura. ^_^;; I'm such a sucker for her work.

Yup, me! And I just submitted my full answer of why to Hey Answerfans. It's a shame some of those OSTs are only available via import, they're all so good.

Interesting information from Justin on Blu-Ray licensing...I wonder if the fees could somehow be lowered to decrease the barrier to entry into this format (fat chance?) Anime on Blu-Ray, at least in Japan, is selling quite well based on sales charts and I'd like it to be given more chance in the States. I also adopted Blu-Ray, and I have been importing the Macross Frontier BDs which look absolutely gorgeous. I would readily double-dip on MF if it were brought out here in support of the industry. Though for the average Joe, with the state of the economy and the price of players still somewhat high, it's likely gonna take at least a few years for BD to be a viable entertainment option.

As for con experiences, I tend to take things in stride. My day job is somewhat stressful, so when I go to cons, I'm there to have a good time and enjoy the company of friends. I kind of take the attitude that behind people's antics, they're mostly doing it in good fun. As long as they don't do anything outright illegal (such as stealing in that one story -- yeah that sucks) or physically hurting me, life's too short to get all ticked off about how others are acting.

And as for soundtracks, several people have already mentioned Macross Frontier, which is a great one. I also loved the Giant Robo soundtrack. I don't think it was mentioned, but I loved the 80's pop music from Bubblegum Crisis. Who can ever forget Priss singing "Konya wa Hurricane." Too bad the OVA was never really finished, but that won't stop me from loving the great music.

Your dog looks awesome, I hope he is the new Answerman image. I have three dogs myself, but the internet is a vast space, I don't know who is looking at them.

Still, you have a cool dog. As for my favorite music, I'd say Hare&Guu. Probably only a few people are going to know this title, but the opening theme song for Season one, two and the OVA were quite amazing.

I love the opening themes for the first series and the opening and ending for Deluxe... but the music within the episodes is otherwise pretty unremarkable.

on blu-ray, i own few of Japanese releases myself...as a collection and not for watching per se...

I bought Air TV series when it first came out...it was first anime to be released on blu-ray and just wanted to get it...

then I got Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Panic: TSR series...I was happy that it had both Japanese and English audio which was done by ADV which they did fantastic job and I have yet to watch the series in Japanese...only disappointing fact is that when you want to watch the series in English audio, you HAVE to watch it with Japanese subtitle...I was like "WTF!??!!"...but oh well...I can live with minor annoyances...and I can always build HTPC with blu-ray drive and remove subtitle via software playback instead of using PlayStation 3...and yes Full Metal Panic Fumoffu?! is coming out on blu-ray this month and I have preordered it as well...

I think blu-ray will SLOWLY come out but as long as DVD still remains as dominant media format, blu-ray on anime will be a niche market for collectors....

As far as the "how much is too much" issue, I think an important thing to remember is that a career (for example) is not an end in itself. Like someone paraphrasing Aristotle said, "everything aims at happiness".

Leeching off your parents is ill advised since it's unsustainable (even assuming they don't get fed up with supporting your mooching ways, they're gonna die before you do), but if there was some NEET out there with a few million in the bank somehow, more power to him. It takes a pretty nasty person to condemn someone for being happy, you know?

Another good vocabulary lesson, err, column, Brian. Laughing

I've noticed a lot of complaining about "extensive vocabulary" in the review section too. I'm pretty sick of it.

I deal with this situation a lot - everything from constant teasing by my siblings to actual harrassment by patrons of our library - because people think I'm trying to outclass them with my choice of words.

Look, if you grow up in the South, you have a southern accent. If you're in a profession that deals with a lot of words, like journalism or writing columns, you learn words. It's not like I sit here and think, "Job...job...no, that's too common. Oh, I'll say profession." I just say "profession" because its the first word that comes to mind. I'm sure Brian doesn't flip through a thesaurus when writing his column.

The only time I ever use my knowledge to actively outclass someone is if I'm being bullied (haha...it works sometimes). So give the writers on this site a break already. It's not going to kill anyone to learn a few extra words.

There are just too many songs in the .hack//Sign soundtrack that I regularly listen to to not call it the best anime soundtrack ever.

That was my first thought upon seeing the question. The soundtrack was the main reason I watched as much of it as I did (I gave up about halfway through the series). I have a friend who feels the same way.

However, I'm going to have to fall in with the Macross Frontier faction. The songs add flare to the scenes they accompany, and they're great on their own as well.

And can someone tell me why Elfen Lied is not included in the list of best anime soundtracks? I really liked that one Smile
I do however agree with FLCL being one of the best, The Pillows' songs were excellent.
I also sortof like the Hellsing sountrack. It has a cool blues/jazz theme.

The United States government isn't the best government it's cracked up to be. But yeah there's tons of political discussion websites and forums out there where that kind of talk is acceptable. Politics on an anime board is, well, not fitting. Razz Only when appropriate of course.

Yeah, it makes reading the articles more entertaining. Listening or reading someone using the same words or phrases over and over again becomes pretty tedious over time. Some creative use of vocabulary really brings the writing to life.

And I am really digging the new Answerman. I hope Brian's cheery and jovial attitude persist in the column a year from now.
