New Beta Video Portal? Didn't they know VHS won that format war? Laughing

Gee, why all the mouth-foaming madness over Ikki-Tousen? No, it's not fine art. Yes, it's very ecchi, with pantyshots, nudity, and Clothing Damage in abundance. But obviously Funi saw some merit in re-releasing it, now that the second season's coming out soon eventually. While some find shows like IT to be guilty pleasures at best and utter dreck at worst, I think Funi knows that there's demand for it. Possibly in their iTunes/Xbox Marketplace distribution channels, which Geneon never used. Can you really blame Funi for going after something with perceived sales potential? From a business standpoint, "Trashy and Profitable" > "High-Concept but Unprofitable."

Ikki-Tousen is still somewhat available, though. At the least, all the singles except V1 are going for way less than MSRP used. Then again, it's a lot easier to find if it's all in one box on store shelves as opposed to separately from online specialty retailers.

I doubt most people would be happy, or care, with a CCS rescue.
You're going to have to start reading the AoD forums. A lot of people there - including myself - would be thrilled and most certainly will care for a CCS "rescue".
But AoD's forum population was equally thrilled with the licensing and release of Princess Tutu and Fighting Spirit, and we know how those shows fared overall. I don't doubt for a moment the loyalty and support of that userbase, just saying that having those things doesn't guarantee that an R1 release will be successful.

I mean they could license Seto or Sayonara but instead are just rescuing Geneon titles.
With all the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei talk in this thread, the question that's on my mind is: Why would anyone familiar with SZS and Funimation's typical releases want Funimation to pick it up? Funi couldn't even handle the storybook in the last episode of Rumbling Hearts, so does anyone really think they'd bother with the walls and walls of text in SZS? I want the show to be licensed too, but by a company who would handle it right, like ADV or Nozomi, I'm all for buying SZS on DVD, but I'd rather those DVDs not require me to keep the fansubs around for reference.

Sorry for all the bitching, I think it's disappointment settling in.

But true, for them to stay afloat, they probably have to shill out mass-consumerist stuff that doesn't require much thought (Afro Samurai, Ikki Tousen) and know there's still a fan base for the much better stuff.

Why would I feel the need to buy Last Exile, Gad Guard, Vandread or the other Geneon releases when I bought the complete series sets for $50 each through Right Stuf?

How about the other people who want to buy it. There are only ~150 copies each remaining of the boxset and collection. These series are about to fall out of the retail networks and the rising secondary market shows demand.

Colonel Wolfe wrote:

Besides, Funimation isn't simply re-releasing them, they're shrinking the sets down to four disk sets, stripping the bonus features from the sets and selling them for the same over-inflated price.

When and where have they done this?

Colonel Wolfe wrote:

Yes, I'll continue boycotting Funimation ... oh, and Funimation better watch it ... if they obtain too large of the market share, they could find themselves under the eye of the FTC and an Anti Trust lawsuit and I would consider that poetic justice.

Why did they pick up Ikki Tousen? Why?

Probably because it's cheap, and they actually believe it'll make money. But hey, I hope this'll keep up the hope for quality Geneon anime license rescues. I wonder if FY is next.

I agree with you wholeheartedly - this probably will make at least some money, and was probably dirt cheap. And hopefully they'll pick up some of Geneon's better shows later.

But I'm not so enamored about FY. I still think that Haibane Renmei should be near the top of Geneon's licenses that should be preserved.

Just to get your POV, why aren't you too psyched about someone rescuing Fushigi? I heard a lot of good things about it back in the day, but even then the series boxes were prohibitively expensive.

From what i understand about Fushigi Yuugi it can be boiled down to wish furfillment for women - the (female) protagonist gets transported into a fantasy world and is suddenly surrounded by attractive males.
It could be brilliant for all I know, but It's not a show that sounds good to me. I didn't say it shouldn't be rescued, but I still belive that Haibane Renmei should be rescued first.

However, the chances of rescuing for Fushigi Yuugi are much greater than Haibane. FY's very marketable to the people who snatched up Ouran and Peach Girl.

Ugh-what a waste of money and time for FUNimation Evil or Very Mad

This show is a pointless soft-core porno with fighting in it. There are dozens of other titles out there that should have been picked up or rescued, but no they chose such a pointless title that's barley worth the budget to dub it.

By the way, I doubt FUNi could be cited for monopoly by U.S. Anti-Trust law. The anime industry in the United States is very much an Oligopoly

heavy: So basically, Fushigi Yuugi sorta does a similar thing to what Escaflowne and MKR did much better.

To get back on-topic, yeah, I bet FUNi will also get ahold of the sequel seasons. It's junk, but it's junk that sells. But why did the creators try to give the show a (incredibly shallow) illusion of depth by throwing in a half-assed bunch of references to the Three Kingdoms? What's more the DVDs didn't include historical notes or anything that would help someone unfamiliar with the tale sort things out.

You would think at the least, if they wanted junk, they would've picked up NEW junk.

Like oh, I dunno, Koihime Muso? You wanna talk about pretty artwork, fanservice and mediocre plots? Look there. I loved it too, it was my kind of guilty pleasure.

I have no qualms with shows that offer lots of fan service.

Look at Godannar. It had incredibly well-endowed, bouncy women, AND crazy robots. It's doubly orgasmic for fans of both of those things.

Ikki Tousen is like Street Fighter with brainless bimbos.

EDIT: I just looked up that Koihime show, and hey, it's also (very very loosely) based on one of China's most prominent historical war periods! How coincidental.

^Yes, fight the power fanboi! You'll show the man some day.

I'll be picking this up, because I want it and the Geneon box is going for a fortune new right now.

Let's see ...

Suzuka, Ah! My Goddess, Desert Punk, Negima, Moon Phase, Samurai 7, Mushi-shi just to name a few. Condensed from six DVD's down to four DVD's? You can't condense the DVD's down and not get rid of the bonus features on the original disks ...

Boycotting FUNi because the first announced license is a junk show, but if the clues are any indication the other rescued stuff will be worthwhile?

...I'm speechless.

Has anyone else had problems with Funimation's video page now. I use to be able to use it and now it says "We're sorry, but due to your geographic location, we cannot allow you to gain access to this content"? I live in WI so I don't think that should be a problem.

It also seems likely that they're hinting at Hetalia Axis Powers (set to air in Japan early next year) in the same card which has the hint for Evangelion, since it starts out "Hey Talia".

What's more likely to be liscensed? The remake of the most popular mecha series in american anime history, or a show no one has heard of about World History as told by bishonen men with massive amounts of Ho Yay?

Don't get me wrong I would love to see Hetalia to get liscensed just because I find Italy, Hungary, and Sealand to be hilarious. It's basically one of the most outrageous comic strips I have ever seen .
