You know...I don't know why you guys are so stoked about this new lineup of Newtype magazine. Kadokawa publishing is just taking advantage of current Moe fad. Besides, Animage magazine from Tokuma itself makes similar branch publication called "Moe-mage" or something like that. In few years, both magazines will stop publishing those once the fad dissipates.
For people buying Newtype Japan magazines and others, how many of you actually read contents? Let me guess, you guys are buying it because it has pretty pictures that you could scan off and put them on the web.

Any speculation on why the leading kanji, which is usually read "musume", is given a reading of "nyan"? I thought "nyan" was what Japanese cats say.

It's a wordplay. "Nyan" is the way it pronounced in Chinese, yet, thanks to Ranka Lee of Macross Frontier and many other anime/manga titles, lots of Japanese anime fans know that pronunciation.

Furthermore, "nyan" is also cat's meow in Japanese, so combining the kanji and its Chinese pronunciation automatically leads to cat girls.

It's business and makes money. Simple.

Thanks. I should have the remembered the rule: if a kanji or reading is not in my Japanese character dictionary (which is mostly limited to the Ministry of Education set of characters and readings), look it up in a Chinese dictionary.

Speaking of Ranka, NEVER use her "ni hao nyan" as "hello" in front of any Chinese-speaking male, unless you are absolutely sure that he's a Macross Frontier fan. The same pronunciation can mean something completely different and can be quite insulting to some people.

The one aimed at us gals tends to be pin-up shots (full page spreads of the art they've run in the pages of Newtype). My daughter buys 2 so she can cut one up usually. Sanseido only gets it in occasionally.

OMGWTFBBQ I thought I was the only one who does that!

Does she also use them to make collages on her walls?

Yes, she hangs them on her walls & also buys the sort of binder that allows her to put a picture inside the plastic. She's starting community college at the end of January, so I don't know if she'll continue with this or not.

And of course one has to strategically cover any chicks/ugly dudes (Bleach calendar comes to mind of her covering Yami, etc)
