While I must say that the one preview on the peeing dog link looks very much like Eichiro Oda's style, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a One Piece knock-off. Nowadays, it seems people constantly comment on the generic character design in manga these days. Oda's visual style and storytelling technique were both influenced by Toriyama, so I see no harm in someone using a similar style to make their manga more distinguished.
As for wether or not Seven Seas will recieve any modicum of success, I honestly haven't the slightest idea. From what I've seen in the preview site, they have a lot of visually appealing stuff. The quality surpasses the bulk of the Tokyopop manga created stateside. It would be awesome if this stuff was in color. That's a nice luxury US-made manga can afford over the Japanese. Alot of Japanese writers, both in anime, manga, and games are beginning to create products with a decidedly Western flavor. Who's to say it can be done with enough panache here in the U.S.? |
