Twitter Trend Awards Reveals Top Trending Anime Words for Each Month in 2018

Every year, the Twitter Trend Awards give out a prize to the most-tweeted words on the social media platform. Last year, Kemono Friends was dubbed Anime of the Year, leading to director TATSUKI accepting the award while wearing a penguin suit.

In the lead up to the award announcements on December 26, the Twitter Trend Awards account has been posting the most popular anime-related words on Twitter for each month. According to their tweets, the most popular words are as follows:

  • "I've been thinking about Hellshake Yano"
  • "Let's Meet At The Witch Assembly" (a tag for witch-themed art)
  • Zoids World
  • Pop Team Epic

March

  • Ojamajo Doremi Quiz
  • "A title you really want to see become an anime"
  • "Gundam lol" (Gundam Wing was rebroadcast on TV during this time, and the Japanese slang word for 'lol' is 'w')
  • "A rush of anime adaptations" (Refers to the anime announcements of Karakuri Circus, Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural InvestigationDorohedoro, etc.)

  • "Stop piracy"
  • Code Geass the Re;surrection
  • "Gintama has five episodes left"
  • "Your Pancreas" (a reference to the novel and movie I want to eat your pancreas)
  • "My voice actor is..." (a reference to an online application at the time that gave you the name of a voice actor who would voice your character when you input your name.)
