Voice Actor Yuuki Kaji Says Metamorphose no Engawa Manga is About the Meaning of Life

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Voice actor Yūki Kaji shared his thoughts on Kaori Tsurutani's Metamorphose no Engawa manga, which topped the list of manga for female readers in the 2019 edition of Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook. Kaji had previously performed the voice-over narration for a promotional video about the manga.

The story of Metamorphose no Engawa is about a 75-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl who become friends because of their mutual interest in BL (Boys-Love). In the commentary video, which was posted on last week, Kaji described the manga as a story about "the meaning of life." He said, "The story is gentle and laid-back, but underneath that, there are heavy themes like 'What does it mean to live?' and 'Who am I?'"

Kaji remarked that he was also struck by the seemingly misfitting title of the manga, which he described as "science fiction-like," but felt that he understood the themes as he read further. The "metamorphose" represents the change that happens within the two main characters when they meet and get to know each other. Kaji said that he related to the portrayal of the relationships in the story, and said that he understood very well why the characters' shyness and self-consciousness makes it hard for them to connect.

Kaji concluded by saying that the manga is heartwarming for showing that people of different generations can connect, and that he hopes that people of all stripes will be able to enjoy it.

Metamorphose no Engawa first began serialization on Kadokawa's online manga website Comic Newtype in November 2017. Two collected volumes have been released so far. The manga also ranked first in the "The Best Manga 2019" feature published by culture magazine Freestyle.
