Boogiepop and Others Anime Gets 2-Hour Special for 6th Novel's Story

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Special adapts Boogiepop at Dawn novel; VS Imaginator, Boogiepop Overdrive stories also being adapted

The official website for the television anime of author Kouhei Kadono and illustrator Kouji Ogata's Boogiepop and Others (Boogiepop wa Warawanai) light novel series revealed on Monday that the anime will adapt the Boogiepop at Dawn novel (the sixth novel in the series) in the anime's 10th to 13th episodes. These episodes will air together as a two-hour special on AT-X (February 23), KBS Kyoto (February 25), Tokyo MX, Sun TV, and BS11 (all February 24), as well as two one-hour specials on TV Aichi (March 1 and March 8).

The site also revealed that the anime is now adapting the Boogiepop Returns: VS Imaginator novels (the second and third novels in the series) as of the fourth episode, which aired on Saturday. The anime will also adapt Boogiepop Overdrive: The Piper (the fifth novel in the series), but it did not specify when this story will debut. The anime adapted the first novel in its first three episodes.

The anime premiered on January 4 with a one-hour special. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs in Japan, and Funimation is also streaming the series. The anime will have 18 episodes.

Shingo Natsume (One-Punch Man, Space Dandy both seasons, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.) is directing the new anime at Madhouse. Tomohiro Suzuki (One-Punch Man, Tiger & Bunny, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.) is writing and supervising the series scripts, and Hidehiko Sawada (key animator for One-Punch Man, Redline) is designing the characters. The musician kensuke ushio (A Silent Voice, DEVILMAN crybaby, Liz and the Blue Bird) is composing the music.

MYTH&ROID is performing the opening song "shadowgraph." Azuna Riko is performing the ending theme song "Whiteout."

Seven Seas Entertainment published the light novel in English, and is reprinting the novels along with new volumes. The company describes the story:

There is an urban legend that children tell one another about a shinigami that can release people from the pain they may be suffering. This "Angel of Death" has a name: Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real.

When a rash of disappearances involving female students breaks out at Shinyo Academy, the police and faculty assume they just have a bunch of runaways on their hands. But Nagi Kirima knows better. Something mysterious and foul is afoot. Is it Boogiepop, or something more sinister...?

Madhouse previously animated the Boogiepop Phantom 2000 television anime, consisting of original stories set after the first novel in the series. Right Stuf released the series on VHS and DVD in North America.
