Fifth annual 3D Creative Arts Awards held January 28 in LA

At fifth annual 3D Create Arts Awards held on January 28 in Los Angeles, California, The International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society recognized the film adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's Captain Harlock manga, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, as the best international animated feature film of 2013.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock remakes the classic anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock with Toei Animation's highest production budget ever at the equivalent of more than 30 million U.S. dollars. Shun Oguri and Haruma Miura star as the title pirate and the new character Yama, respectively.

The film opened in Japan last September 7, in France on December 25, and in Italy on January 1. Captain Harlock continues to do well at box offices in France and Italy. It is among the most successful Japanese films ever screened in Italy, earning about $6.8 million by the end of January. The film also was screened out of competition at the 70th Venice International Film Festival last year. More than 80 countries and regions have sent offers to Toei Animation to distribute Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

The Blu-ray and DVD release of Space Captain Captain Harlock is slated for release in Japan on February 21.
