Hmm, I wonder how this is gonna work out, I know their usual thing is the imprints of anime/manga, but live-action, and of creation of whatever library Viz has? Well, I guess that's something, or probably surprising, either way, I guess we'll find out anything more from this soon.

I will say it here and now, this will not have a happy ending, many have tried and failed to make great live action out of manga/anime and failed and I do not think Viz has what it gets to do it, maybe James Cameron will do a nice battle angel alita, and that still is an open question.

Well the one film they've been involved with so far was Edge of Tomorrow, which pretty much everyone agrees was awesome (though of course it was based upon a novel not a manga). I'm guessing they're also connected with the upcoming Death Note and Genocidal Organ films, so that should give us an idea of whether EoT was a fluke.

"Involved" doesn't necessarily mean they're going to Hollywood with a dream, like ADV trying to make that Eva movie all by themselves--

EoT and Death Note were based on Viz mangas, so since they owned the US marketing rights, contracts dictated that Viz would get their logo on the credits of whoever did make one, and maybe help out with putting some production capital into it if they thought the movie would sell more merchandise.
If they make some capital from it, that might fund a few attempts at a division for funding original productions, and this would seem to be the early stage.

What they need to do is focus on getting SeraMyu translated and brought over to DVD here.

Hmm... Well these are Viz properties so they CAN be handled well. And Edge of Tomorrow was fantastic. The Death Note movie sounds good on paper too. Hell, maybe they can even pull off the Naruto movie.

Even if they pull off a good live action movie I'd just think, 'wouldn't that be amazing as an anime?'

All I really want out of them is a NA release of the Japanese Hana Yori Dango drama. That's it. Viz did the English manga release, it seems right in their wheelhouse. I'll pay whatever they want to charge, I just wants the precious *grabby hands*

I wouldn't mind seeing a live action Sailor Moon movie since Viz now owns the rights to that show also a live action One Punch Man. Very Happy

Not gonna lie, I would totally dig a live action Sailor Moon movie if done right. I doubt Viz owns the live action rights though. I think this is more for their manga/novel properties, since they're co-owned by Shueisha and Shogakukan (Sailor Moon is Kodansha).

That has since passed into Robert Rodriguez's hands.

I can picture absolutely perfect Sailor Moon movies done right:
(For example, what if they spoiler[skipped the meeting-Luna origin altogether except for a flashback, jumped straight to the 4-girl team before Venus joined--so, is the marketed Sailor V real, and why is one of Usagi's crazy impulsive new transfer schoolmates and her cat sticking her nose into trying to investigate Usagi's part-time activities?--and then center it around the buildup to the Day of Destiny story? Oh, and frame the whole story in flashback, as a future NeoQueen Serenity, with the obvious reveal at the end, tells a "fairytale" to a pre-R Small Lady, thus leaving room for a certain sequel if necessary?])

But, like that sadly never-to-be "Geena Davis as Queen Beryl" movie, owning the US show or manga rights isn't owning ALL the rights. Sad

Which he'll do right after The Jetsons. Rolling Eyes

I now pay less attention to a Robert Rodriguez "upcoming project" Twitter-announcement than I pay to a Guillermo Del Toro one.

Why do I get the impression that there's a potential Game Center CX angle to this news?

Even live-action is becoming en vogue in Japan nowadays
