My thought exactly!

I think this is going to have 2-cour, definitely (I hope) Very Happy

It's funny when Soma says "I'll quit cooking" in the end without context. That's sure to make a few people worry.

The Ova better tell how Erina don't know love like in the manga since that the only time after Souma dad that love was every mention in the series.
24 episodes i am sure of it. the rest of the Autumn Elections at least 17 by it self.

The difference in translations between the Viz manga release and the anime simulcast are interesting, though I personally believe the Viz ones make more sense and go through more direct clearances by the Japanese Shonen Jump publishers such that they're more likely the "official" names.

Case in point: the tournament everyone in the anime is currently in, which this second season will resume. In the anime it's referred to as the "Autumn Elections," which makes no sense as nobody's being elected to anything. "Fall Classic" seems a more appropriate title. Similarly, "Council of Ten" seems to more accurately describe the role those individuals play at the institute--they collectively decide the policies of the place--compared to the anime translation "Elite Ten": isn't it repeatedly stated by the faculty that everyone present is already elite in the first place? The dormitory being named "Polaris" per Viz's manga makes sense given where it is located and what its residents represent, plus it makes that one Fist of the North Star joke make sense. The anime calls the dorm "Polar Star" instead, which is not specifically the star Polaris because there are other polar stars.

Maybe I'm just more accepting of the Viz manga translations because I read those first and am thus inclined to think they're the default?

So yea, the original term used for the tournament is 'aki no senbatsu'. Senbatsu's typically translated directly to 'election', so that's the more literal option. 'Classic' is far more likely to have the association with competition for English speakers, of course.
So, 'election' vs 'classic' is representative of a difference between sports terminology in Japan and the west. Over here in the US, we'll see terms like the Fall Classic (MLB) and Winter Classic (NHL) for example. And there's El Clasico from football.
What about 'election'/'senbatsu'? If I have to guess, I'd take a look at Koushien. We've all heard of Koushien; the big national high school baseball tournaments. The actual full name for the Spring Koushien is 'Senbatsu koutou gakkou yakyuu taikai'. (the rest is just high school baseball tournament)

It's gotta be 24-26 eps to get through the Stagiare arc. 12-13 eps to get through 50 something chapters would be rushed madness, and there's no reason like 'trying to time it with the manga's finale!'. Also, knowing that we're getting through Stagiere means that this second season has the opportunity to end on a fantastic tease.

Also, huh, 25 minutes dedicated to Natsuyasumi no Erina. Eh, it's about the length of two normal chapters, so it's about right.

Ugh. I really hate Viz's localized title and relegated the original into a subititle.

Just because Viz is the "official" translator since they licensed it doesn't mean their localization is any good or should use their terms as official. Viz maybe catering to a western audience (particularly American) but they depict the characters with American stereotypes which ruins their characterization of being Japanese. They overuse American slang and speech which is a real turn off especially Alice's valley girl accent. I also hate the fact they drop the 'u' and 'o' with some names since they sound and are spoken differently in actual Japanese.

Sorry but 'Fall Classic' just sounds pretty dumb compared to 'Autumn Election'. The latter maybe a literal translation of 'aki no senbatsu' but its a much more appropriate since they are electing the best among the the first year students for that tournament. Same thing with the 'Council of Ten' as they should be called the 'Elite Ten' since they are the top students of Tootsuki.

As for the anime's second season I'm glad J.C. Staff will animate the Stagiaire arc. I hope they'll end it at the point where they meet the Elite Ten so they can cover the Moon Banquet Festival arc and Nakiri Azami's arc.

To say that the aki no senbatsu 'elects' the best of the first years doesn't meet the vernacular usage of 'elect' (to choose for public office by vote). You can kinda/kinda not apply the 'carefully select' definition of elect, but regardless of whether it's accurate, 'election' is practically never used in the western world to describe sports/competitive tournaments, at least to my knowledge.

What it comes down to is, does your choice of words get across the right idea to a sufficiently high percentage of your audience? And I think that opting for 'classic' over 'election' was the choice more likely to succeed.

That's a trailer for you: Spoiling Soma's retirement from cooking and quitting the academy, and thus the end of the series!

While I don't know any Japanese, I have to wonder: Does the different use of words to refer to competitions and tournaments stem from different notions about voting or promotion? I don't even know if it's a direct one-to-one translation or not--if the word in Japanese can refer to a voting election AND a competition, shouldn't there be a better word to translate it to than an "election," which in English is strictly about voting someone into a position?

Unfortunately I don't know enough to answer the culture question.
I think 'selection' would be the more suitable English word for what 'senbatsu' goes for. So 'election' is in that area of technically works but not so much colloquially. Then, taking one step further to connect to competition, the most fitting English word to use here is probably 'Invitational', like how the full name of Spring Koshien gets translated as 'The National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament'.

Now if it comes down to 'invitational' and 'classic', it's a tough choice for me. 'Invitational' is a reasonable direct translation, is associated with competition (through golf, primarily?), and is functionally appropriate to how it works in-series. 'classic', or rather 'Fall Classic' specifically, is basically invoking the World Series and the corresponding hype. If you don't care for baseball, you'd probably easily opt for Fall/Autumn Invitational. I myself kinda like going with Fall Classic to crank up the hype machine to emphasize 'THIS IS A BIG THING' (for the first years...). But I can go either way without complaint.
