The series' writing is painstakingly thorough in exploring this aspect, to the point that it stretches out some late scenes a little too much.

Did someone count how many times Arima thinks of his mother saying it's a punishment? I'm pretty sure there are at least ten times this happens, and it's increasingly annoying.

This, I'd disagree with. A lot. The humor was garbage and (especially in the first half) often ruined scenes. It gets a little better later on with humor coming to dispel sadness, but in the first half it feels like it actually wants you to laugh and it's... terrible at that.

The tone is all wrong. It tries to be a poignant and serious study of how abuse and pressure can break a person, but it also wants to be a silly romcom where the lead male gets whacked by his main love-interest. Yeah, that totally makes sense; make the guy who was physically abused by his mother get further beaten in the name of cheap laughs. Hilllaaaaaaaarious.

And of course, Kaori's shtick is so reminiscent of an emotionally-hollow visual novel that I had to double-check that Jun Maeda wasn't on the writing or directing staff for this show.

Ugh.

I also agree with this. And the way Kousei's mother would appear in flashbacks with a creepy smile like a supervillan was also almost unintentionally funny.

As someone who loves music, music anime, and tragedy anime, I really wanted to love Your Lie in April, but I just couldn't. Apart from it being slow, I think it was because I really disagreed with Kaori pushing Kousei back into competitions. I had a huge burnout with music my 3rd year of high school that was somewhat traumatic (though not remotely as traumatic as Kousei's), and the answer I found was to play for fun and not for anyone else. I think I was disappointed that Kousei didn't find a similar conclusion. It seemed to me that him finding a life outside of music would be much healthier than trying to work his way back into the world that caused him nothing but pain and horror.

Not to mention that spoiler[Kaori's death had to have made it worse. For him to have finally found some happiness in music, just to lose the person that helped him find it? I know the ending implied he was handling it pretty well, but... I don't think a person can realistically come through that unscathed.]

Your Lie in April is my favorite anime series from 2014. Its first fourth is shaky, but the rest is worth it.

I just recently finished marathoning this show on Crunchyroll, and I loved it. Even though I understand some of the criticisms against it, it just felt more sophisticated than most anime dramas / romances. The "love triangle" is handled really well, and the characters are actually developed in a way in which I care about them, so the drama is actually compelling and sad. I hate when an anime is manipulative tragedy porn rather than an organic story (when the writers seem to say "you're supposed to feel sad here - totally bet you're crying!!" Looking at you, Angel Beats and Ano Hana!) I did not get that vibe at all from Your Lie in April.

The violence humor didn't bother me as it seemed to just be exaggerated animation which was a far cry from the actual abuse of Kosei's mother - getting kicked in the shin by an annoyed girlfriend as a teen is very different from getting smacked in the face as a small child by a parent. The show could definitely have done without it, though!

I also really appreciated spoiler[the complexity of his mother. She WASN'T just an abusive villain. While abuse is never justified, I'm glad we get to see things a bit from her perspective which, as a mother of a young child, I found heartbreaking. You really see how she went from a loving parent into a desperate abuser. It was terrifying and tragic.]

There's just something about Your Lie in April that makes it seem particularly poignant despite the hoary tropes such as manic pixie dream girl. I think one thing I really liked about it is the fact that realistically the other kids had no idea how it's expected to treat someone who's a victim of abuse. They all fumbled through helping him to recover.

I definitely understand the negative reaction to the juxtaposition of comedic cartoon violence with actual physical (and emotional) abuse, which gives me the sense the author wasn't entirely savvy to what exactly he was creating. Still, for me personally, I was able to separate the two. Also I'm glad that while the abuse and recovery were important, there was also a whole lot of time dedicated to other things (i. e. the slice of life and romcom parts), so the show isn't a complete downer.

i prefered the 2nd cour over the 1st, but theres definitely some elements worth mentioning about those first 11 episodes. tbh i got in this show for the amazing world of classic music which was beautifully portreid by the 1st performances but kousei's trauma also got my attention as soon as they began curing it. i thought the fact that both the cure and trauma came from the same person was rrly interesting and then we had kaori..oh boy kaori.. while at 1st we dont quite understand her intentions or inspirations (or even weakness), the more episodes i watched the more i realised how much i cared for this character. This cour was also important for upcoming events, to make some strong moments even stronger with the usage of lots of simbolism and memories of past events.

Theron--

Just an FYI:
You wrote:

I tried to love Your Lie in April for the benefits of its many aspects, but somehow I can't. Many people are really into this show, and I understand why, but it just doesn't appeal as well to me. I'm relieved someone else actually doesn't think it's great here.

I also think the show is somehow trying to sell itself as a rom-com + free-market, but works itself too seriously. Those jokes totally are lame and works only to pull me out of the world (and the chili style made it more annoying).[/quote]

The abusiv- I mean slapstick humor is one of the things that really detract me from really taking this anime seriously. How to force a traumatized, abused child to play a piano again? Let's beat him up until he agrees to play. Cue some heartwarming scenes right after the cheap humor as if to assure the viewers that they are doing this with a good intention, for the betterment of the MC.

The other main inclusion is part 1 of the series' OST. While it does offer a great variety of instrumental numbers (including a variation on the closer), it clocks in at less than 19 minutes total for 10 tracks, so I think I would have preferred that they wait and put it all on a single disk.

Yeah, so... that was extremely disappointing. Unless they are releasing part 2 with 50 tracks, this isn't going to have even half of the tracks on the actual OST. Kind of actually pissed off about that, since that was ultimately what sold me on these sets. I've been listening to my friend's copy that he imported while I waited for this to come out, but yeah, while the JP release has over 60 tracks on it, this has a measly 10(with another 10 on the second set, most likely). It honestly feels like a a boldfaced lie for them to say that these releases come with the OST. They don't come with the OST, they come with a few random tracks from it. Way to go AoA.

This annoyed me so much. It was by far the weakest part of the show and always destroyed my suspension of disbelief.

It's funny that you mention that, as "tragedy porn" is how Your Lie came across to me...and Angel Beats/AnoHana didn't.

Angel Beats' synopsis, being what it is, may impact on my impression. But, already knowing that going in, I felt like it'd rob itself if it wasn't filled with tragedy. On AnoHana, I didn't work it out until the characters actually find out, so I was totally along for the ride, and it never felt like a tragedy until it was revealed.

Your Lie...gave me just enough to already guess as to where it was heading. And, to me, seeing it play it's hand so early in the piece felt like a hit to the head. And then following episodes just felt like more hits, so I let it go.

spoiler[Broken guy meets girl who happens to be sick...and she's clearly the one that is going to fix him.] Maybe I should revisit this show, but at the time I was initially seeing it, that ended up being too much for me to take in. Well, that and me not liking Kaori much...I didn't seem to enjoy the characters from what I saw of the series.

The CD included in this set is a re-pressing of the CD included with the third Japanese BD/DVD limited edition volume. When I inserted it into my computer's drive to rip it for personal use, the lookup instantly went to that CD's listing.

The CD in the next set will be a re-pressing of the CD included with the fourth Japanese BD/DVD limited edition volume. These are noted as "original soundtrack volume 1/2."

AoA's soundtracks/CDs are always re-pressings from the JP BD/DVD releases. The version that you are mentioning was a separate standalone release from the BD/DVDs that AoA can't include with their sets.

^Were there other volumes of the OST included with other JP BD volumes? Or were the 3rd and 4th BD volumes the only ones that came with music?

It seems like getting access to the rest of the music would have been fairly easy considering Aniplex's relationship with Sony. It doesn't have to be the exact same release, but it should have the all the music from the series if it's going to be marketed as "original soundtrack vol. 1 and vol. 2" across a 2 part Blu-ray release. Otherwise they should title it as a "music CD", like they did with Gurren Lagann, and Kill La Kill.
