For Ringo's reason to come to the school, spoiler[Minori wrote her a letter about Kosaku, Ringo fell in love with him solely on the letter, and the rest is history; in the eighth light novel they even get hitched]. A shame the anime avoided saying that, likely in an attempt to keep to the source.

And what Funimation tradition of dubbing the songs? For me, I'm still eternally pissed that Euterpe from Guilty Crown - easily one of the greatest insert songs imaginable - was never dubbed except by Amanda Lee.

Anyway, I might check this out. The promos are hilarious (Kei wears ladies' underwear - sort of).

I've noticed that it doesn't happen with the broadcast dubs, although I don't know if that is something they would be willing go back and do for the disc version. I'm guessing that the time constraints for broadcast dubs don't allow them enough time adapt and practice a song like they can for home video.



A big part of why I bought this is because i grew up on a farm, so it seemed like I would get a kick out of it, and I wasn't disappointed. I found myself genuinely amused by this show throughout, and I was impressed that the farming aspects seemed to come from experience and/or research on the topics discussed.

Performance-wise, I have to say Tia Ballard was the standout for me. She mentioned in the commentary how much she wanted the role of Becky, and it came through in her performance.

No-Rin is exactly how I like my raunchy comedies. It has some wonderful characters, a surprisingly great conceit and a wealth of jokes to mine for both cheap laughs and some genuinely funny moments. It reminds me a lot of B Gata H Kei, one of my favourite raunchy comedies, and that's always a good thing.

I'm really glad Funimation was confident enough in this one to dub it. With some other series getting the sub only treatment, this was a pleasant surprise.

I believe that's mostly because they aren't given the Music and Effects track for the broadcast dubs. Efforts are certainly being made to get songs dubbed for the disk release. Caitlin Glass has confirmed that the songs in Show By Rock will be dubbed and Chris Bevins is hoping he'll get to dub Alex's song in Gangsta.

You can blame Aniplex solely for that one. Funimation even put a disclaimer on their disc stating that the producers specifically requested that the insert songs remain in Japanese.

That makes sense. I'd be fine with it either way, but I've generally been pleased with Funimation's dubbed insert songs, so I certainly don't mind if they want to go back and do the songs at a later time.

In comparison to all other companies, FUNimation easily wins out on most dubbed songs. Like Theron said, they've done it frequently over the years. Nowadays, they mostly stick to dubbing insert songs. Also, I don't know if you're aware, but FUNimation actually has a disclaimer in their home video release of Guilty Crown. [EDIT: SpacemanHardy beat me to it, I didn't refresh my page, lol]

Here's what they have to say about it:

Funnily enough, Black Butler: Book of Circus has it too (No mention of "Aniplex Inc." this time), but a little different and only mentioning that the Japanese audio track is kept at 2.0 stereo sound, which is very odd. (FUNimation normally keeps the Japanese audio in 2.0 most of the time, but for some reason they had to have a disclaimer specifically for this one and I think it's their way of saying that they weren't allowed to do a 5.1 upmix for the English audio track.)

So there you have it, I believe when they have disclaimers like this it means they probably had plans to do those stuff, but were hindered one way or another. For Guilty Crown, I'm guessing they originally had plans to have both Euterpe (Insert Song) and Departures (ED 1) dubbed and I'm guessing the reason is because both of those songs are actually sang in character by Inori. Also, why would they even have Alexis Tipton record it? Here's her reply to someone on Twitter.

I have not watched No-Rin, but B Gata H Kei is one of the few anime comedies that I like and own. Your enthusiastic endorsement has convinced me to check out No-Rin. Thank you.

And on Funimation dubbing songs, I have liked the few I have heard.

I've never watched a Shin Oonuma comedy that clicked with me. Baka & Test, Watamote, and Anne-Happy all ended up in my drop pile after only a few episodes, and from the way this one's described I doubt I'd enjoy it any more than the rest of those.

Funny you mention that it's accurate to real farming, because the season premiere consensus review constantly got on the series' case for not being as educational as series like Silver Spoon (which is unfair because Hiromi Arakawa also grew up on a farm).

For me, Austin Tindle actually had the best performance. In most of his roles, he mostly sounds like British Bryce Papenbrook. Here he showed that he had octave range, going from soothing to eccentric to his typical brooding. But Tia was great also, mainly because it's one of her deeper-voiced roles. I even liked Jad's a lot; it was a way to show off both her shy little girl typecasting (Eve Genoard from Baccano, Lisa from Terror in Resonance) and her British tsundere typecasting (Carla from Fairy Tail, Koneko from High School DxD).

Also, anyone know when the review for the new Naruto Shippuden volume is coming out?

Great review (though maybe a few too many details..., but nothing major). Based on it, and the comments above, I'm going to have to check this out. Convenient timing since I was just looking for something new to watch, but short, since I'm about to head out of the country next week.

What killed me was when all the male students pick up the teacher and throw her out the window and her line is "this isn't the kind of going down I had in mind". I lost it at that part, I had to rewind and listen to it again. Coincidentally, that is the same episode that explains that Becky's dad is a big shot politician and that is how she keeps her job while performing the antics she does.

Becky is the highlight of this show hands down.

I hope you enjoy it. While not my favourite series of 2014 (partially due to only discovering it in the past year), it is definitely a great one that deserves some more attention.

It's only too bad that some people may just remember the tourism poster debacle and avoid this one due to that.

It's a shame that that happened to Euterpe. The thing is, with those insert songs that are sung by the actual characters, if they are talking in English but singing in Japanese, it comes off as an inconsistency, which is one of the reasons I prefer the sub version of Angel Beats. Besides, Egoist was always making tons of cash off of all the other theme music, so why not? Alexis Tipton should be a good singer, especially since Ai Kayano didn't sing the song herself and, as typical for Japan, had to get Chelly to do it for her.
