Scarlett Johansson's understudy? Laughing

This *seems* like they're responding to whitewashing concerns, but who knows what goes through the mind of Hollywood executives. In any case, I wish her luck!

Edit: I looked up who she played on Game of Thrones, and I'm impressed. Not only is she the first Asian actor on the show to have a speaking role, but she played a Red Priestess who are powerful, magical characters. And (season 5/6 GoT spoilers) spoiler[apparently she intimidates Tyrion and Varys in her scene! That's an accomplishment!! In the latest ep (season 6, ep 5) her superior, Red Priestess Kinvara, was given an important role, so it's possible she'll be reappearing and hopefully be named as well. I'll keep an eye out. ]

She was great in The Wolverine. While I'm still interested in what they'll do with the 3rd solo Wolverine film, it's a shame it won't feature her and Logan having another adventure together. At the end of The Wolverine (spoilers for it and Days of Future Past), spoiler[I thought that two year period where they traveled together might be explored in the 3rd movie but obviously DOFP's time-wimey retcon ended that (I can forgive it since it also fixed the middle finger that was X-men 3).]

I love Scarlett, but this girl would've made an excellent Motoko.

I'm satisfied that another Asian actress is being cast, but, alas, it's way too little, way too late. Rila would've been awesome as Motoko-san.

Actually I would say this is pretty good news. I mean we already had Beat Takeshi in there, but now we get Rila in so there's TWO Japanese actors in this film. What's the odds of two Japanese cast members in a Hollywood film that's based on a JAPANESE franchise.

Far and away the most worrisome thing about this movie is the director. The only full length feature he has directed is Snow White and the Huntsman...

"one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid"? Really? The premise of GiTS is that almost everyone has cyborg parts installed in them. This is an important point as it is used as a means to deal with the age-old philosophical question of whether one's soul/identity resides in the mind or body. I guess her full cyborg body could be considered rare, but she definitly wasn't the only one in the series with a full cyborg body either.

Most people here haven't seen her act, so who knows how good she is

Seems she only appears in Hollywood and NHK shows, so if ya don't watch those, then ya haven't seen her

Beat Takeshi, Rila Fukushima, Kaori Momoi, Yutaka Izumihara. There are 4 Japanese actors in this, more than any other nationality.

The series made a point that there were very very few full-cyborgs. The normal and even exceptional humans just couldn't deal with essentially becoming a machine. So it is the 1% of the 1% sort of thing. In that sense the major can really be considered fairly unique. And parts of the stories go to pains to explain she is.

As for how the movie will twist the stories around though, who knows.

And "human-cyborg hybrid"? Ugh. A cyborg is already by definition a hybrid. Talk about adding redundancy to your sentence Hollywood.
