One of the worst movie sites I've ever seen. Their own movies get better sites than this. The French version looks much better. Only visit the site if you haven't seen the trailer, apart from that, pointless.

Not the absolute worst I've ever seen, but I do have to agree, it's very plain and empty, looks rushed. Maybe they'll add more to it as it gets closer to the date of the movie. |

What I wanna know is why it's being released in only select theaters. They did this to Spirited Away to; and I ended up driving almost an hour away to go see the film, and was late coming in. Disney Movies get into EVERY theater, why doesn't Ghibli get the same treatment?

Maybe Disney think that American audiences wont be able to understand and appreciate a Japanese animated film by an oscar winning studio based on a popular British Childrens book.
Would it get a wider release if the rights were owned by another distributor? Maybe. |

Hmm...the reason they probably don't want to show it in every theater is because a movie as good as "Howl's Moving Castle" will show how stupid most Disney movies can be.
It's along the lines that "Spirited Away" beat out Disney movies for awards.
I'm just worried that Disney might damage the movie  . If they do...I'll be sad--the movie is wonderful as it is! I will curse Disney if they do as horrible of a dub/sub-track as they did with "Neko no Ongaeshi" aka "The Cat Returns" (It was rushed, or so it seemed; even I who knows little Japanese than professional translators caught a LOT of mistakes).

Once again, if the 700 screen report is true, it would be excellent distribution for an anime film. Anime films will never get the same kind of distribution as Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks animated films, because anime is, and will always be, "niche" in the North American market, and they'd likely spend more on advertising and prints for a wide release than they'd make back, as the wider audience just isn't there.
If Dreamworks got the rights, they'd put it on 50 screens and wouldn't do a dub. |

I agree, I'm very happy that Disney is handling Studio Ghibli's American releases for now, because there simply isn't a better company to do it at the time. Disney's dubbing for Spirited Away was, for anime standards, downright fantastic, and I prefer the English voices to the Japanese. (Mainly just Chihiro's voice. I felt that the Japanese one didn't sound immature and young enough.) |

I have to disagree.
Anime films a niche? Do you have any figures for the Digimon and Pokemon movie releases? If you exclude them why not exclude Ghibli aswell. What does Ghibli have to win to prove that their films are far better and a much better investment than most of the movies that get 1000s of screens. You think Dreamworks would only release it in 50 screens and subbed only? Forgetting the fact that Spirited Away being such a big hit around the world and winning a Golden Bear and an Oscar? Sorry Tenchi but you couldnt be more wrong. Dreamworks arent that stupid. |

Digimon and Pokémon don't count as they're kiddy mass-merchandising phenomenons with a built-in audience from the television series.
Spirited Away was popular by anime-in-North-American-theatre standards but wouldn't likely have gotten that much more of an audience in wide release. It managed to win an Oscar because of critical momentum. |

I'm probably going out on a limb here, but I have to say that I've practically enjoyed all the Disney/Ghibli dubs they've produced thus far, and am greatly looking forward to seeing Howl's Moving Castle.
I understand that some people feel differently about the dubs, but whatever. I like all of 'em, and that's what counts. -Jon T. |

I loved Disney's dub for Spirited Away, so it's most likely to be the same for Howl's Moving Castle. I heard they got a good cast for the movie.

The main girl's "old lady" voice sounds like the same lady who did Yubaba and Zeniba from Spirited Away, so I'm already convinced that the dub will be excellent. :) As for Dreamworks, they've poorly handled the anime that they've gotten their hands on in the past, like Satoshi Kon's great film Millenium Actress. Didn't release it to theaters, sparce, plain dvd, and no dub. Also, the only reason Spirited Away made semi-deccent money in the theaters was because it was re-released after it won an Oscar. Before the oscar, the movie's income was very minimal. |

Actually, the woman who voices old Sophie is said to be Jean Simmons. (Suzanne Pleshette was the one who did Yubaba.) This is not the first time Disney has cast an "elderly" voice in the role of a Miyazaki dub; other examples include Debbie Reynolds as Madame in Kiki's Delivery Service, Cloris Leachman as Dola in Castle in the Sky, and Edward James Olmos as Mito in Nausicaa. All were successfully done. The thing that I've found about interesting about the Disney dubs is that there are two different sides debating them. Some argue that using big-names will only distract from the aural experience, hence their preference for subtitles. Others believe that bringing in such famous actors actually warrant the listen of the dubs. I've talked to several people about the Miyazaki dubs in real life, and none of them seemed to have any issues with them in terms of casting or preference (with the exception of a few); in particular, I convinced one guy to check out Castle in the Sky because Mark Hamill was the villain. (And his role was, in my opinion, arguably the best in the Castle in the Sky dub tied with Cloris Leachman's Dola.) So it seems to me that for every naysayer to Disney's dubs, there are just as many who jump in support, and I've found this quite interesting; you can't really use the internet to gauge public opinion, regardless of how popular one site is. -Jon T. |
