I'm on my phone and don't have much time so I'll just say this, I've read violet and I sincerely hope it's a movie. I could feel the beauty of the story though the pages but the book isn't that big so a movie would be advised.

I hope the Violet anime would be a movie. It'll be better that way. I LOVED the animation in that short preview. It was beautiful. I also appreciate the work of animation artists! Hope he keeps up the awesome work and amaze people with his skills!

Violet wouldn't work as a movie as-is. Having read all of the shorts, it's too episodic to be contained in a film without being an editing nightmare and nearly as incoherent as Suicide Squad's story became. The stories are too different, though they each build up the main theme Akatsuki tells about Violet herself.

Now if you say "the final short in novel 1 would work as a movie," that's a different situation. It's a long, self-contained short that tells an interesting story with interesting characters and would fit in the timespan of a movie. My only issue with that is the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger to build anticipation for the second novel. It would likely have to have an epilogue or such added to it from the other material to fit.

Thing that stood out to me while reading that is how everything, from screenwriting to editing, that can't be done in house requires them to go to people in Tokyo. I knew the business was concentrated, but not to that extent. Sounds like a PITA.

I last heard Kyoani was building a new building to house their operations. Have they moved in already, and is the new building their admin HQ or the animation studio?

Construction on their new building (which is a 3 story building with shop included) stalled for the better part of this year. Machines were moved in and progress on the actual building itself began this past weekend. It's likely that this will house their second studio, shop, and merchandise development divisions as those are in rented space in other buildings. That would allow the studio to own all three of the buildings they use and not have to pay rent on them.

Man. KyoAni is easily my #1 studio ever. People give them crap about some of their works (Kyoukai no Kanata for example) but I've found every one of them to be very enjoyable (didn't bother with Free...not my style) to some degree. Their art is the best. You can always see the hard work and care they put into their art.

As for future works, I really hope they're doing the final season for Full Metal Panic. Their schedule is mostly empty (Violet not having a date yet), so I'm praying the event in October will announce KyoAni as the studio >.> It would be amazing for them to go back to a franchise from a decade ago, but it wouldn't be too surprising to me since they did work with Shoji Gatoh on Amagi a few years ago. Praying hard because their works on FMP were absolutely the best.

The difference while reading this interview, compared to those with others in the industry is kind of stark, to be honest. Maybe it's just Ishidate's personality, by itself, but there is a sort of relaxed feeling to it. Like he is entirely content with life and what he is doing. Reading interviews with many other creators belies a sense of frustration, or at the very least, a high level of stress and feelings of insecurity. In any event, I would love to see the KyoAni production style become more feasible for other studios. They have created some phenomenal work, and it only makes it more enjoyable knowing that the people behind it are living fulfilling lives.

@Kougeru KyoAni tends to have great scheduling compared to other studios, hence the animation quality. Budget is important, but shows like Gundam SEED Destiny and Attack on Titan are amongst the most expensive pure anime, yet they have atrocious animation. Even parts of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex are horribly animated. That's why most KyoAni shows look and move good.

Seriously though, some KyoAni shows have animation almost on par with early Spongebob episodes.

There is a certain sense of disappointment when once considers how much of an anomaly Kyoto Animation is in the industry.

Recently seeing Tamako Love Story confirmed my view that this studio produces the most effective character animation of any company. Even trifling movements, such as the precise way a character's legs dangle as they sit, can convey emotion in a stark yet natural way when KyoAni animates them. It is as if their employees have distilled what it is about the medium of animation that amplifies the affective significance of body language, and ensured that every relevant scene trades in such a commodity.

Doubtlessly this is an upshot of their working environment, something that cannot be replicated within the Zeitgeist of Tokyo-based studios.

Another great article, Mike. I can't wait to see their new movie.

Small grammar quibble: "lying around," not "laying around." Using "lay" instead of "lie" is one of the most common grammatical errors; I see it everywhere.

Kyoto Animation and ufotable are the only animation studios that can consistently deliver high-quality animation at will. More anime studios should follow their company management style.

ufotable? That despite the delays of the God Eater anime and some of pretty poor drawings in later episodes of Unlimited Blade Works?

Bamco was a part of the committee and they forced simultaneous production of both so that GE could coincide with the release of the game. Coupled with the new art style used on it, what did you expect?

All of this explains the delays on God Eater despite the hyped pre-screening and the poor quality of episode 18 of UBW.
