Yup... 3D CG is getting better and better. And then there's Berserk 2016 ruining its reputation.

The 3D CG isn't really bad, it moves well and the effects they used on it, does make it look flatter than some shows out there. The only big problem with it, is that they are using it in the first place.

And occasional episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal... Confused (Not so much 3D, I guess, normally, as just visual care and quality.)

The 3D CG is almost there, they're still struggling with floaty animation and too mechanical in-betweening, but I think really soon a show will come along that just nails the techniques and everything else will follow suit.

That show is not Berserk no.

Berserk is killing me, there are moments where it is really wonderful, and then suddenly it looks like a crappy PS2 game. I can't even.

Sailor Moon Crystal III was a huge improvement over the first two seasons.

And while that Space Pirate Captain Harlock movie wasn't trying to look 2d it is a damn fine looking 3d movie that manages to capture an anime ascetic without it looking like the uncanny valley.

In a way, the improvements that have been made result in making the bad ones that much harder to bear. Frankly, I'm still baffled that they went for CG when it was consistently pointed out as a major flaw in the movies. I would have thought that would mean they would either go with more 2d artwork, or improve the CG.

Honestly, on my large screen computer monitor, I can't see any appreciable difference between a 1080p anime stream and a 720p. So I just stick with 720. I doubt there's going to be enough people (in Japan at least) flocking to super-large or high-res screens in the immediate future to necessitate going up to 4K just yet.

telling at least roughly when a series was released

That's pretty easy. I can tell the year, the target audience, genre and amount of episodes based on one to three screenshots. If those screenshots are not carefully chosen to make such an assessment difficult. And I bet most fans can.

I don't know if this is related to increased CG use or just a difference in character designs in recent years, but I have noticed that characters of late look more...squashy, if that makes sense. More marshmallowy, less detailed, and with less angular designs. I actually kind of dislike it. Characters look less appealing and fall further into the uncanny valley spectrum. It isn't true of all shows, and its very subtle, but it's a realization that's been creeping up on me.

I think my epiphany on 4k was seeing the original Jurassic Park on a 50" screen at our local Best Buy. The CG Dinos held up fairly well, but being able to see the Pancake ( Make Up ) on the actors took me out of the story instantly.

I don't see where Anime would benefit from that level of detail, the source material just isn't designed with it in mind. The CG stuff is getting better and thankfully I wasn't planning on watching Berserk.

Hopefully there will still be idol anime with no CG. Also you have another stinker in Mahou Shoujo Naria Girls this season, seriously, anime experiments like this should not be airing on TV unless it's coverage of a convention or press conference where it's being displayed for viewing. That has to be the worst CG anime this season.

Gundam Thunderbolt was mastered in 4k for the theater releases, the BD ofc is still mastered (or in this case) downscaled to 1080p for release.

Not as true as you think. Play an old game in an emulator some time: old textures that looked great start looking worse and worse as they get upscaled beyond all reason.

The problem is CG will NEVER (and I really mean it) have the same feel as 2d animation. It's simply not designed to work in the same way, you don't deform character models in CG where you do in 2d. Imo CG characters are fundamentally the wrong direction for anime to go because you start to lose the very essence of what makes anime...anime. Anime, as a medium, is about over-exaggeration, CG tends to give series too much of an easy baseline to follow.

CG works well in backgrounds, sometimes large objects, effects and crowds - but I really don't think that any anime should be all CG. It doesn't matter how good you get the characters to look, you lose so much in the process that it's just not worth it. Not to mention that anime 3d is SO far behind western CG that it makes no sense to enter that market. Stay 2d and use new technologies to bolster that.
