Yes, yes it is--and this is where I admit that I kinda sorta like harmless teeny bop once in a while.

Take a wild guess.

That's what's always bothered me about American fans. They sometimes go on about how "hard-core" they are and how much they hate Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and all American Pop in general, but then talk about Morning Musume, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Nami Tamaki like they're the greatest contributions to music in the past 400 years.

Not that there's anything wrong, per say, with liking these artists, I just hate people that claim American pop and Japanese pop are somehow fundamentally different.

But they ARE different. One has English-language lyrics, the other has Japanese-language lyrics. Rolling Eyes

But musically and subject-matter wise, yeah, they're about the same. (Although Japan's pop scene tends to lag the US by a few years -- Nakanomori Band is proof that they've just discovered the Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne style. And there was never a disco backlash in Japan so it still creeps into a lot of songs.)

Ah, you get that in any fandom about anything. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yeah, it's true. These kinds of opinions are pervasive in fandoms. Oh well. I do like the song she did for Gundam Seed.

Personally I like Nami Tamaki's music over many other J-pop vocalists. It's hard to find music that are optimistic these days with everyone always boosting how depressed and f*ked up they are because of issues they can't handle.

About how original things are, is anything really original these days? It's like art, about 60% is theoritically original and 40% is ripped off someone else. It's part of trying to discover a personal style. I don't see anything wrong about that. After listening to her second album, Tamaki's music is gradually changing.

Besides we have all heard music by one artist that practically sound the same. From Linkin Park and Staind to Two-Mix and Move, they all began that way. It's not a crime to continue to learn and improve while you're in the business, y'know.

Isn't Backstreet Boys a bit of a dated reference? I haven't heard of their name in years (good riddance).

*Gasp* Well, let's fix that right now. The Backstreet Boys have a new album called "Never Gone" in the works, and the first single from the album, "Incomplete," premiered on TRL just a few weeks ago.

So there.

Like V1cious stated, apart from the language it's quite homogenious where played.

;___; Whaaat, I love the Backstreet Boys. They were one of the best parts of the 90s, man! Plus they've got a new CD out, even though Nick Carter is totally a fat slob now. And he's got Paris' name tattooed on his wrist, which is totally gross.

I love Nami Tamaki. She's one of my favorite artist, in matter of fact i do worry about the fact that I'm not a big fan on american pop. I wouldn't necesairly label Nami's music jpop because she has a mix of rock and upbeat. Her second album is better than her first.

LOL

I also made a Nami fan site, visit if you like.
