Oh the irony, it's freaking killing me. Jaded cynicism aside this is good news for manga fans in the states.

That mention about the starting of a manga club got me thinking about one thing and I'd like to ask from you guys.
How common are manga/anime-related clubs and reading circles in your country/area?
I wanted ask this because here in Helsinki, Finland, and the surrounding two cities I know only one... the one I founded and still host after a bit over five years. We gather together in a library at the eastern corners of Helsinki and we discuss games, manga, anime, conventions and such and meet every Wednesday and the main purpose is to suggest and introduce titles to others via themes we decide together. Ours has been the only club in here for YEARS(I know... small country and all...) and it got me wondering how common are these clubs elsewhere? Do you meet in libraries? Do you spend time together outside meetings(we do....though nowadays less than a year ago due to people studying and working, having kids etc.) and how welcome are you in libraries, cafes and other public places?

You'd figure it'd be Digital Manga, after that last KnJ crowdfunder.

Hasn't Viz censored a decent amount of manga themselves?

Not the same kind of censorship. There's a difference between a company deciding that they are going to modify their own work, and a government telling that company that they have to or they'll be taken to court. The CBLD fund deals with the latter, but bizarrely, most "controversy" and "fan outcry" is in response to the former.

Yes, which is probably what Cecilthedarkknight_234 was referring when they said the irony is killing them.

I still don't see the irony, they're two completely separate issues. It's not like Viz censors their own works because they are afraid of being sued or arrested, they do it because their marketing team thinks they'll sell fewer copies if they don't. That's not a "legal" issue at all.

So Viz is now fighting the power. Fight the power. Fight the power. Viz got to fight the powers that be.

Hmm. Yen Press would have a better choice for a corporate member in my opinion. They've never censored a title, and have titles that appeal to all ages. (I almost said Vertical but they're a bit more niche.)

Viz hasn't censored any titles in years. We're talking about a company that released Tenjou Tenge uncut here. Get over your ancient grudges.

Maybe not manga, but their release of Nurarihyon no Mago was the broadcast version. Both seasons. A fact that was first acknowledged by avid viewers before Viz officially admitted it.

To be fair, Dragon Ball's 3 in 1 releases keep randomly having old censored pages despite supposed to being uncensored. And the Full Color Dragon Ball stuff used the censored dialogue from later releases at a few points at least (damns being removed and such).

This has come up before, but when something like that happens with the broadcast version, it's usually that the Japanese company gave them the broadcast version without telling them what it actually was. It's what apparently happened with Sankarea. The company not admitting it is usually them not actually knowing about the mistake.

In America it's pretty common. My school has a manga and anime club. But anime and manga is frowned upon in schools a lot because many teachers and even librarians don't even count them as books. But to each their own. If they don't like it then that's fine. But i'm glad viz media is taking an approach to bring anime and manga in a bigger spotlight than before.
