I watched it, it was pretty good. I think with all the hype I was expecting more than I should of been. It was a pretty good action show, I suppose later episodes will give more explanation. I've seen better shows this year, but it may be the best action show I've seen this year.I wish the characters had been a bit more interesting, spoiler[I didn't care when Hanna died at the end as I hardly knew her.]

Are there going to be any more episodes? From what I've heard, they only got enough money for one episode and they haven't said anything about making a full series. |

Its definitely in the kickstarter copy that I watched today. It does look pretty bad, but keep in mind that the vast majority of this ova looks great. There is only a few shots that look shitty, and this is one of them. I don't know why it was included in the article. |

Well, this was generic. Very, very generic.
Not that I expected something breathtaking but this was really very underwhelming. I guess if you're out to ~save anime~ it lends your project credibility if you do something actually unique instead of the exact same thing you're complaining about only specifically tailored for a US audience. |

I watched my backer copy this morning as soon as I woke up, and I really enjoyed it! The action was tense and exciting, and the animation very dynamic. I felt like it lived up to its goal of being (at least the start of) a spiritual successor to the kick ass action anime of the 90s. It's clear that more of the budget went to these scenes than some of the others like the ones with the pink haired sniper in the article. I'm absolutely hungry for more, and I would definitely back another Kickstarter to continue the series if that's how it went.
That being said, I everything felt under-developed. I suppose that's reasonable given that this is supposed to be just part 0 of a 12-26 part series. There are lots of questions set up and tantalizing hints about what may be actually going on, and we're left with all of them at the end of this OVA which is a little bit frustrating when we don't know when or even if we'll see any of the payoff. If I were to grade it, I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars or a B- grade. It shows promise, I think I like where it's going, but the rest of the series would need to fill out its hollow parts. |

For what was basically a pilot episode,I enjoyed it quite a bit! It introduced you to the world and it delivered with some great action scenes (expected from an action director like Masahiro Ando). Has some derpy quality moments,but otherwise had some great animation It did it's job by making me want more. I could definitely see someone like Netflix picking this up for a series at some point.

Well at least it got made & sounds like it was what it said it was going to be: a 40minute proof of concept for an okayish sci-fi action show with some throwbacks to the 90s.

I dropped $300 on the Kickstarter(I just had to have the Anthea scale figure from Good Smile.....sorry, figure collector.....it's my weakness) and I was more than happy with what we got. There were some low quality animation, mostly during the "down time" parts, but during the action scenes, holy crap, that was some of the best of the year so far.
I hope this gets more episodes, though. |

I think I put down like $20 on it, don't remember since it was like 2 years ago that the crowd funding happened. The thing that really surprised me about the process of creating this was the amount of money necessary to create just a 28-minute-episode anime. I mean, holy crap, that was close to a million dollars on a single episode. Is this how much money a typical anime need for just one episode? It probably costs much less than that since this one had some fantastic animation during the action sequences, but still, that is a TON of money for a single episode.
At the end of the day, there were too many loose ends for it to be considered complete. All those philosophical ramblings will never make much sense unless we see more episodes. |

You gotta take into account the Kickstarter fees,production fees for physical rewards,Amazon payment fees(Kickstarter was still using that at the time),and etc. |

The pilot was fine. Not great, not terrible, a very 90's action anime.
It played around a bit with a fairly generic storyline. Incredibly bleak though. Without a continuation it's just "everything is pointless and over the top grim dark" kind of ending. spoiler[Reminded me of the first episode of Ga Rei Zero.] Animation is a little unpolished, but they managed to get most of the episode to be a long fight. I wanted a little bit more exposition to get a better grasp of the stakes, but they did a good job giving you enough clues to put two and two together for some of the mysteries.[/spoiler] |

Exactly my thought at the end. I think that fits in with what Under the Dog is about. If you recall, when the project was first being spruiked, its then producer boldly claimed that it would be the antithesis of the then current obsession with moe girls. This episode gives us an archetype cute school girl and a similarly emblematic bland, well-meaning school boy then proceeds to spoiler[slice her up and dispatch him as if he were an afterthought]. We know the protagonist of the franchise, if it proceeds any further, is Anthea. She is the deadly serious, beautiful fighting girl protagonist that was more common in anime from the mid-nineties to the anime retraction in the wake of the GFC; an icy, smart killer who recalls Major Kusanagi or Mireille Bouquet. She also has elements of Witch Hunter Robin and the Claymores, in that she seems to be on the verge of becoming the very monster she is fighting. In effect, episode 0 is loudly proclaiming its heritage while rejecting current fashions. I wonder if it will work. |

I really loved it. I thought, for the amount of time available, the character and plot development was on point. I also loved the music. I hope Kevin Penkin gets more work in the future, because that was a great score. I've been listening to his soundcloud a lot recently and the guy is talented.
I will agree with others that the animation was a little rough, at some points, but it also had outstanding moments of kinetic action, and brilliant special effects work. All in all, well worth the money I spent. I actually thought Hana's story was quite interesting and I connected with her a lot over the course of the episode. I guess I'm just easy like that.. Edit: Why is there no encyclopedia entry for this? Kinda would like to add it to my list. |
