Two eps odes in and I'm really enjoying this show, it just the kind of cute comedy I love to watch after I get back from a hard day of work myself. Plus having it be about video games is fun too.

Since Hajime is a part of the "motion" team, I think she's involved with rigging and animating the 3d models. As such, having props around to pose with seems more like tools for her work rather than a hint of her personality.

New Game has been enjoyable, though the character interaction doesn't seem anywhere near as stellar as Dogakobo's title last season, Three Leaves, Three Colors. Hopefully with the characters mostly set in place their chemistry can improve in near future.

I do typically enjoy Dogakobo shows, and something I greatly enjoy is that instead of hearing the same voices over and over, they tend to go out of their way to cast mostly unknown voice actors for the lead roles. Yuuki Takada is doing a rather good job with Aoba, particularly in moments where her character is confused or is otherwise in need of help. That said, I've been really, really impressed with Megumi Yamaguchi who voices Hifumi. Considering this is her first time voicing a main role she really hits her character's timidness quite well.

I was actually a little disappointed with the first two episodes. It's like they have been cautiously going in circles on the original manga, and literally the only time we see the screens they are never actually relevant, it really makes the setting no matter at all.

They seem to go full-dive into the work part for episode 3, because they are actually shown working plenty of times, while balancing the classic CGDCT segments, so I'm eager to watch that episode.

Aoba's capacity for learning is definitely higher than mine. Despite entering the company with no first-hand knowledge of digital art or computer animation, she's ready to start designing characters after a few days of book learning. (Maybe this is why they hired her right out of high school.)

I feel the same way, though I haven't read any of the source material. Unless they start making better use of the setting and incorporating more game design elements into the story, this is basically going to be workplace slice-of-life boilerplate.

The biggest fallacy, IMO, that people make is trying to view New Game! as if it is trying to follow Shirobako's path. From the start, Shirobako positioned itself as a mockumentary about the behind-the-scenes of the animation industry. The characters were odd at times, but not the usual type of eccentric, and the drama played a bigger part within the show's atmosphere. On the other hand, New Game! is a comedy slice-of-life show, and it neither tries to be an "inside look" show, nor it should be viewed as one. Sure, there are numerous game-related processes and interactions, but the same also applies to restaurants in Working!!, or government bureaucracy in Servant × Service.

As for the show itself, I find the characters interactions to be nice, and sometimes amusing, but nothing laugh-inducing here. Not that it's bad, as it is still a nice show to unwind and relax to.

I understand and agree with your opinion on New Game, when compared to Three Leaves, Three Colors. I remember spending last season, trying to figure out why Three Leaves, Three Colors wasn't as amazing as Engaged to the Unidentified, when both were adapted from manga that were written by the same person. Either way, I loved them both and so far I'm really enjoying New Game. It's like a less boring version of Working! with enjoyable characters.

Personally, I wasn't expecting anything even remotely akin to Shirobako. (But now that you've put the idea in my head, a Shirobako-esque look at game development is something I could totally get behind.) I never really thought this show would present us with an in-depth - or a even a particularly realistic - look at the inner workings of the gaming industry, and I'm fine with character relationships and interactions taking precedence over such things. That said, I still think the setting has been underutilized thus far, though I wouldn't be surprised to see this change as the game's deadline looms closer.

True enough. I suppose my point of contention is that Working!! and Servant x Service took place in environments that are instantly familiar to much of the audience - that is, even if you've never actually worked at a restaurant or government office, odds are you've been to one and have a basic understanding of how things operate behind the scenes - so I was fine with the backdrops being largely perfunctory in those series. However, since this show is set at a fairly specialized workplace, I think it behooves them to do just a little more with it. But again, we're only two episodes in, and I wouldn't be surprised to see things change in this regard. (Nor would I be surprised if things stayed exactly the same.)

You need to keep in mind that for the people producing the anime this is not a specialized workplace. Character design and animation is where games and anime overlap. It is always amazing how normal your own workspace seems to you even when it is foreign to the general public. It is very difficult to step back and see the place from an outsider's point of view.

I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying this show. I'm not usually a moe fan, but I guess something about putting it in the workplace and making the characters adults (even if they still look like teen girls) makes it work for me. It reminds me a lot of some of my first jobs and otherwise first adjusting to the "adult world," so it feels very familiar and relatable -- even if a lot of the characters are outlandish and stretch the believability. Hey, the same is true with a lot of American workplace comedies.

Going into this season I did not expect much from this title, but I was instantly hooked with the first episode. After the first 2 episodes I am liking this relaxing show, and I hope it can become even better over its run.

well, oneo the workers is already sleeping on the office, they are alreayd skiping lunch to get work done and finish work pretty alte at night even then, it just seems that those girls are better than the shirobako ones regarding handling stress.
While shirobako had a lot of work related plot points (if not all) this one seems to go for the relaxed moments, so to speak, so it's more like the things a person would tell their family/friends about their job.
I could not help but think, when aoba aasked why girl if she has a boyfriend, that shy girl was thinking "err...it's a requisite to be a young lesbian to be hired in this company, how are we supossed to have boyfriends?".

Best episode so far, really glad that they showed us a very engaging part of the manga, and if they keep this trend, it surely is going to get better. Although, next week we're having Innuendo the Episode, probably not much work related stuff.

Funnily enough, when it was implied Yagami could have a boyfriend, everybody put their ears up, but her totally not girlfriend had bigger ears.

I don't think I've ever graced a non-player character with a second glance - and now I hate myself for it.

Aoba is finally able to finish the character model by thinking of it as a human being with a personality instead of a pile of data that needs to be turned in on time.

Am I the only one here that will admit to seeing only the slightest difference between Aoba's first pass and the so-called acceptable version? Or for that matter between hers and Hifumi's?

Oh, well. Aoba is as cute as bug and that's enough for me. For now.

I barely noticed any difference period - but that may have been the point. I think Ko wanted Aoba to be able to spot the subtlest imperfections.
