Well, that's really too bad. It was sweet of him to make a special apology video rather than just releasing a generic statement, though. I wonder... Does anyone know why he entered and exited holding a frying pan in front of his face?

I feel bad for anyone that flew over just to see either of these people... very expensive to fly over. People could be hundreds or more. Sad

I think it's because he appeared in Shirabako (as he mentioned which was pretty cool) as the gentle old man in Musashino, Masato Marukawa, who was often found cooking for the staff members iirc.

Anyway, I hope they manage to finish Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni in time. It's probably my most anticipated anime ever, and I just want it to be as good and successful as possible. It's unfortunate that the production was so troubled, but it proves even more what an admirable person Murayama is. I still hope he manages to find a way to finish Satoshi Kon's Yume Miru Kikai.

In my opinion, Maruyama is the single most important person in the industry in the last few decades. His passion has shaped anime in a very positive way, and without him, many exceptional productions (especially the financially risky ones) would have never been made. He co-founded Madhouse and founded MAPPA and continues to produce high-quality content to this day even though he's 75 already.

From what I've read about manga artists, many are very shy, and he most likely feels guilty about having to cancel the appearances (being that conventions are very expensive, and many people were planning on travelling very far in order to see him). Although his health and well-being definitely come first, and he shouldn't feel bad for focusing on himself. He can't create the work people love him for if he's too unwell to work on it.

Just like the character in Shirabako, Maruyama sensei is known to cook for the staff working on various productions at MAPPA.
